When you live in the city centre, it is easy to get bored with the sights – even if you love them! Here are eight fun things to do in the greater Glasgow area for when you are tired of the city centre.
The Go Ape centre in Aberfoyle is a great day out for the more adventurous types. Go Ape is a treetop adventure park which allows you to climb and zip-line your way through the trees. The Aberfoyle park features a 323-metre zip-line with a 45-metre drop back to Earth. With the stunning backdrop of the Trossachs National Park, this place is truly worth the effort.
This hidden gem is tucked away inside The Lagoon Centre in Paisley. The Eve Spa offers a range of treatments including facials, massages, mud therapy, reflexology, manicures and pedicures. It also has a service called The Thermal Experience, which involves Rasul mud therapy, an aroma room, a Chinese salt room, a sauna, monsoon showers, a foot spa, and an ice fountain. The best part is that they offer a membership, meaning you can get discounts on your favourite treatments and access the Thermal Experience whenever you want!
If history and culture are more of your things, you will enjoy a trip to the Summerlee Museum. The museum is built on the site of the old Summerlee Ironworks, incorporating the main workshop of the Hydrocon Crane factory. You can ride on a traditional Glasgow tram and explore the old mines. The museum is full of interactive displays and interesting stories about Glasgow’s Industrial Revolution, so you will not be bored!
If watersports are your thing, you cannot go wrong with Pinkston. Pinkston Watersports hosts Scotland’s only artificial whitewater course offering kayaking and canoeing, rafting and river boarding, as well as swimming and triathlon. The whitewater course is 100 metres long and 10 metres wide and is perfect for paddlers of any ability.
Auchentoshan whisky claims to have been “forged in the fires of the Industrial Revolution and the Glaswegian sweat of our forefathers.” It is a whisky that is proud to be from Glasgow. You can tour the distillery that makes this great Glaswegian drink.
The tour guides will show you how the distillery works and what goes into creating the perfect whisky. You can also join a tasting session at the private bar. Of course, there is a shop at the end where you can buy a bottle to take home!
There are a few indoor trampoline parks in the Glasgow area, but is the ultimate in “air sports.” Ryze sports super trampolines, waterfall trampolines, foam pits, and airbags. You can also engage in games like Xtreme dodgeball, or try to unravel yourself from the aerial silk. This is a fun way to let off some steam with your friends – and it will help you keep fit!
Over in Coatbridge, you will find The Time Capsule waterpark. This is no ordinary swimming pool. With 10 metre high flumes, a wave pool, a huge tipping bucket of water, and a lazy river with a rapid ending, this is the place to be for the best swimming experience. If that is a bit too much for you, though, there is also a 25-metre pool where you can swim until your heart is content.
Glasgow is known for its Victorian tenement buildings and its glass skyscrapers – it is not really known for having castles. However, Bothwell Castle sits only 10 miles outside Glasgow and was a major player in the Wars of Independence. You can visit the 13th-century keep tower, the 14th-century chapel, and the ghastly medieval prisons in the prison tower. This will definitely make a change from the city centre.
