In the modern day, we all live a fast-paced life. We are busy with work, university, school and general life; we often don’t have many opportunities to take care of our skin as much as we’d like. Sitting for hours on a long-haul flight is the perfect opportunity to pre-pack an in-flight skin care kit and pamper yourself, killing time while you’re doing it! Read on for the ultimate skin care kit for a long-haul flight!
One of the most important steps in any skin care routine is makeup removal! When flying, remove your makeup using Micellar Water or makeup wipes, as makeup-free skin will dry out less and feel more comfortable in the Aeroplane atmosphere. Micellar Water can also double as a face cleanser if you don’t feel comfortable using the Aeroplane washroom sink to wash your face, as it is quick and easy to use with a cotton pad. French skin care brand Bioderma offers a fantastic Micellar Water which is easily transferable to a small clear container that meets flight restrictions.
Once you have removed your makeup, it is best to deep cleanse your skin using Face Wash. In flight, it is best to opt for foaming varieties as they are less drying than gel cleansers. Although Aeroplane washrooms are not ideal facilities for washing your face, it is worth it, as face wash will leave your skin feeling clean and refreshed while on a long-haul flight.
As per usual, it is important to follow up cleansing with good toner or mist. On a long-haul flight, it’s best to avoid strong toners and instead opt for a hydrating toner or mist. Rose water is an excellent, soothing and hydrating option that will help prevent skin irritation caused by the drying atmosphere on an airplane. Spring water mists such as Avene Thermal Spring Water Spray and La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water Spray are also good options for soothing skin.
Moisture is the golden word on a long-haul flight; the air on an airplane is notoriously unforgiving, contributing to moisture loss in your skin. A good hydrating mask will act as a barrier for your skin, delivering important moisture to your skin and re-hydrating it. Leave on, remove and re-apply throughout your flight to reap maximum benefits from this product.
Despite the scary connotation that comes with the word ‘acid’ Hyaluronic Acid is not a harsh substance; it is one of the best possible treatments for dry skin. This clever substance attracts up to 1000 times its weight in water and works by adding hydration to the dermis, promoting much-needed moisture retention, lipid barrier strength and visibly plumping the skin. The perfect concoction for a long-haul flight!
Towards the end of your flight, following the re-application of your mask and serum, apply a rich, water retention moisturiser to further maintain moisture levels in skin. Eucerin Aquaporin is the ideal choice for this, as it contains Gluco-Glycerol. It also comes in an SPF version which is perfect if you’re landing in a sunny location!
Slather on lip balm to keep those lips hydrated and get that perfect, peachy pout! Often, lip balms are petroleum or mineral oil based so they create a film over the lips without sinking in and truly moisturising them. Opt for an oil/beeswax-based lip balm like Dr Organic’s Manuka Honey Lip Balm, for a deeply moisturising product, more suitable for a long-haul flight.
In daily life we often neglect taking care of our hands and cuticles, leaving them dry and cracked, particularly with prolonged contact with detergents and other cleaning products. Sitting on a long-haul flight is the perfect time to add a nourishing product to your flight skin care kit, applying it to hands and cuticles. You could use a cream specifically for hands and cuticles, or simply apply your lip balm, in order to minimise the amount of product your carry in your hand luggage.
With all the focus on keeping your skin hydrated, it is easy to forget about your hair! Your hair gets dried out easily on a long-haul flight, just as your skin does, so it’s important to give it some TLC. Apply a rich, leave-in conditioner to your hair strands, coating them completely, to seal in and add moisture. Noughty Intensive Care Leave-In Conditioner is an excellent, 97% natural product to use on flight.
Although we often avoid drinking fluids on a flight to avoid having to use the (often unpleasant) airplane washroom, the single most important thing that you can do for your skin and hair on a long-haul flight is drinking plenty of water! Topical products are excellent for boosting the skin, but no amount of product will be able to help your skin and hair from the inside, or on a deeper level, without the addition of consuming water. H2o is a must for your in-flight skincare kit!
