The Summer Fashion Trends You Weren’t Expecting

I think it was somewhere around the Christopher Kane Crocs and Balenciaga IKEA bags of SS17 that I stopped trying to understand what the thought process of the fashion world was. As with pretty much everything that is going on in the world at the moment, my reaction to these things is best summed up with this gif of Hillary Clinton. It’s a weird time for everyone – this upcoming season’s summer fashion trends are no exception. In any case, I’m liking it. This is the summer of dad trainers, noughties revival, pastel co-ords, office wear, anything transparent, cycling shorts, as much denim as humanly possible and looking like you work at a garage. Here are the top summer fashion trends to be aware of for this coming season!

1) 00’s

It really should come as no surprise that the noughties have seen a comeback. I’ve been biding my time for this faithful day – it’s been hinted at for the past few seasons, perhaps to ease us all into it, perhaps to slowly brainwash us into thinking that yes, yes this is actually cool (definitely worked on me). Think matrix sunglasses, PV leather, and spaghetti strap camis. Small sunglasses, seen at Prada, are the easiest way to channel the noughties.

2) Florals? For spring? Ground-breaking

It obviously wouldn’t be spring or summer without florals (although we’ve seen a lot of winter florals lately, too. Idk – I guess we all just really like flowers?) In any case, with all the weird stuff going down the runways, this is unexpected in its unexpectedness. Seen all over the likes of Dolce & Gabbana, you can’t really go wrong with floral! You probably already have a floral dress lying about somewhere, but if you feel the need to update your wardrobe for SS18, here is a great inspiration.

3) Office Wear

Although this may be a bit of a marmite trend (and definitely unexpected), personally, I’m a big fan of this – it’s loose and tailored and you always look smart, and you can mix and match the blazer and the trousers (those big blazers are perfect for the cooler evenings). Pair with trainers for a casual look, or dress them up with heels and a lacy bralet for nights out! Seen here at Gucci, the gender-neutral trend is set to be huge this season for summer fashion trends.

4) Pastel Co-ords

A statement version of the office wear/co-ord trend. Seen all over the runways – Michael Kors is behind this lilac number – and in various shades of pastel, these work best with a really bright red lipstick (try MAC’s Lady Danger).

5) Denim on denim on denim

Remember when we used to laugh at that picture of Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears and reminisce over simpler days of poor sartorial choices? Remember how much fun we had in our ironic double denim fancy dress? Remember those days? Did we think they would come back? No we did not. But alas, here they are. Here’s some denim. Dark, 2000’s denim.

If you're in the market for the best volumizing shampoo for fine hair, then this one of the best shampoo's to try for that out there! In addition, it will help with thin hair too, resulting in a more voluptuous style!

6) Trench Coats

Amidst all these unexpected summer fashion trends, a familiar sigh emerges: the trench. It’s almost a breath of fresh air, and pairs amazingly with the co-ords! We’ve seen traditional beige ones, pastels at Dries Van Noten, sheer trenches at Burberrry… but if you want to make a bit more of a statement, try a black patent one to fully embrace the 00’s trend.

7) Transparent Dressing

This can be anything from sheer mesh dresses layered over t-shirts and underwear to full-on see-through PVC coats: the choice is yours! If a full sheer number is a bit too daring, try a more subtle number similar to this Dolce and Gabbana dress.
