Here is a compilation of three of the most haunted locations in Manchester and where to visit them. Manchester is one of the largest cities in the United Kingdom and it best known internationally for it’s historical significance, it’s football clubs and for being the birthplace of musicians such as Joy Division, The Smiths, The Stone Roses and Oasis. Manchester is also home to some of the spookiest sites in Britain and there are many chilling tales about the city.
The third largest airport in the United Kingdom, Manchester Airport is in fact one of the most significantly haunted locations in the city. There have been several reported sightings, particularly at Terminal 3, that have dated back to the past 50 years. According to the tales, the apparition of a recently deceased night guard has frequently been seen passing through the gates, while others claim to have seen the spirit of a former pilot creeping through the terminal.
Other notable, spooky occurrences are the slamming of doors without any logical explanation, a constantly eerie feeling after dark and other apparitions of men in pilot uniforms. Terminal 3 is built on what was an old RAF base that was used in World War II. There has been at least one known death at the site, however the vague information that is held means it is difficult to determine the source of the other unexplained occurrences. Nonetheless, it has gained the reputation for being a notably haunted location in Manchester.
Manchester Cathedral was built in the early 15th Century and was almost destroyed during World War II 400 years later. There has been an overwhelming amount of recorded activity at this cathedral – both good and bad. One of the main urban legends surrounding this haunted location in Manchester is that of the ‘Fanny’, a supernatural apparition that was bared witness to by her brother.
The legend depicts how her brother described seeing the strange apparition in utmost shock, the reason being was that his sister Fanny lived several hundred miles away in another city. After the unexpected confusion of seeing her, while he was praying in the church, he discovered that she had in fact passed away the night before.
One of the most sinister apparitions that has been affiliated with this haunted location in Manchester is that of Black Shuck, an infamous and evil spirit. Meant to be an omen of death, the creature lurks through Greater Manchester and has been witnessed by many of the people residing in the area. He has been a part of Mancunian folklore for many centuries but was apparently exorcised decades ago.
The Ordswall Hall in Salford, Greater Manchester is one of the Manchester’s most haunted locations. There are a number of apparent identified ghosts, according to legend, and some of them are that of Lady Margaret – who is said to have died of heartbreak after her brothers death – and Sir John Radcyffe who’s exact death is unknown but there have been claims of him making several advances on female visitors in the hall.
Additionally, there have been recurrent reports of loud, unexpected noises and the creaking of doorways opening and closing. The hall arranges daily GhostCams between 5pm to 8am for paranormal enthusiasts wishing to glimpse a ghost on camera. The Manor also arranges visits for tourists in the city and for paranormal investigators who would like to witness the activity that regularly occurs.
