The New Fitness Trends To Follow This Year
We all know that we should work out – you don’t need me to tell you that it’s vital for your health. What I’ve found, though, is that it takes a while to figure out the right kind of exercise for you: some of us enjoy team sports, while others want something quick and easy. With the insane amounts of new fitness trends and classes popping up every year, it can sometimes feel like there’s too much to choose from. To help you out, we’ve compiled some of our favourites fitness trends for 2018:
1. Variation
Even the most dedicated gym goer knows that working out can be extremely boring, especially if you’ve been doing the same sets for days now. Try mixing things up a little bit – change your classes weekly, or have a look through different sets you could be doing on each day to keep things interesting
2. Cross training
Lots of gyms are now combining cardio with strength training in a single class: for example, you’ll see yoga with HIIT or cycling, or HIIT and cycling in the same class. These routines are easy enough to do on your own, too: go for a run on the treadmill or a cycle before/after a Flow or Pilates class at the Glasgow University gym, or create your own ‘classes’.
3. Yoga wheeling
This new fitness trend has been gaining popularity on Pinterest and is great for at-home workouts: the wheel allows you to stretch further, improving strength and flexibility, and is great for all levels.
4. Apps and videos
As students, we’re more than familiar with constantly changing schedules and busy days – it can sometimes be challenging to work these around regular gym classes. Here, fitness apps and videos can be a massive help, as you can do exercises from home when you want! Fitnessblender and POPSUGAR Fitness are good Youtubers to check out, apps like MyFitnessPal are useful for following your nutrition intake, great for those of us trying to do a, say, low-carb diet. Most videos and apps are completely free, too!
5. Pole workouts
Pole dancing has gained mainstream popularity over the past few years, and for a good reason: what better way to really work out your entire body than using a pole to lift yourself up off the ground? Pole dancing/workouts offer a fun way to gain more strength, flexibility, and stability – Glasgow University’s pole dancing club often offers taster sessions and beginner’s classes in this!
