Get in, girls, we’re going to save the world.
Charlie’s Angels might exist only to you as a vague memory of three badass women, dressed to the nines in nineties/noughties clothing, kicking ass and taking names. I was a little too young for the films – and I wasn’t even born for the original TV series from the 70s – so this is my recollection.
For others, of course, Charlie’s Angels is a franchise that deserves to be rebooted. Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu were divine, and the feel-good flavour of the films were fun enough. Serious critics may have turned their noses up at it for its lack of good writing, but movies don’t have to be good to be enjoyable.
We’re hoping, of course, that this next one will be both.
This is a modern world, a world that apparently loves to remake old franchises, so it was only so long before Charlie’s Angels was going to return.
There are new dangers in our lives that didn’t exist when the originally TV show aired – and, thankfully, much better technology for the crew to take advantage of. The Townsend company has expanded to become a global phenomenon, fighting the forces of evil with new tricks, new weapons, and some good old-fashioned butt-kicking.
Kristen Stewart may be known to everyone as Bella Swan from Twilight, so this is something a little different for those expecting to see Stewart pout and frown for the majority of the film. Instead, she’s the woman on the ground, dressing up and going undercover.
Ella Balinska is the newest one of the cast, having previously appeared in The Athena and done guest appearances in TV shows such as Midsomer Murders and Casualty. In this film, she plays Jane, the former MI6 agent who keeps a cool face when bringing down the bad guys – but crushing hard over a shared love of chemicals with the film’s love interest, Noah Centineo.
And, of course, you might be surprised to see Princess Jasmine – or the Pink Power Ranger – taking up the mantle of one of Charlie’s Angels. Naomi Scott is back for another mainstream film, this time not a superhero or Disney princess but a software engineer-turned-whistleblower worried about the future of the world.
These girls are in the hands of not one, not two, but three Bosleys – the girls’ middle man for when it comes to their missions – one of whom is going to be played by Elizabeth Banks. Banks is most recognisable as Effie from The Hunger Games, and Gail Abernathy-McKadden in the Pitch Perfect franchise. Not only is Banks acting as the girls’ main point of call, she’s also written and directed the film!
Charlie’s Angels was always about women showing the world how it’s done – that they can be women and spies, too. Considering the show aired in the 70s, its feminist leanings come at no surprise at all.
Talking to Collider, Banks said, “One of the statements this movie makes is that you should probably believe women. We have as much validity in what we’re feeling and how we want to go about living in the world, being in the world, and that was really important to me, that we felt like we had characters that were being taken seriously and given a chance to live their best life.”
The good news just keeps on coming. As heard in the trailer, the soundtrack is going to feature songs from quite the musical pedigree. Ariana Grande, Lana Del Rey and Miley Cyrus have teamed up for the main theme, and Ariana is the co-executive producer of the film’s soundtrack!
Charlie’s Angels comes out in the UK on US on November 15th – so we’ve got a bit of time before can we whether this new film lives up to the camp and camaraderie of the previous hits!
But until then, we can always watch the trailer (again, and again) and get ourselves excited!
