Deciding to go to grad school can be a tremendously rewarding experience. You get to meet new people from diverse cultural backgrounds, learn intensively about a subject you’re passionate about, and make memories that you will carry forever. Change is a powerful thing. Going from finishing up your undergraduate degree to starting a new course requires fast adjustment to new surroundings. For example, attending grad school means that you won’t have as much time to spend with your closest friends because some of them might be moving to a new country, others may be working full-time, while others may attend a different university from yours. This is a reality that’s inescapable for many, but change is not always a negative thing. Going to grad school can be as awesome as you want it to be! An important question to consider, however, is: What should you wear? What is appropriate for grad school? Don’t worry too much, though, as we’ve got you covered. Here are some style tips to know before you embark on your new academic journey!
Considering that in the UK grad school usually starts at the end of September or beginning of October, at least one trench coat should be a part of your wardrobe. Grad school ≠ baggy trousers, jackets or hoodies!

Sneakers are still popular amongst grad students because they are comfortable and easy to maintain, but if you’re really getting into the groove of grad school fashion, a pair of leather desert boots can turn you into a style guru at your university.

Please don’t wear sweatpants on your way to lectures or seminars! You’ve got to look professional, as this is not the time to be lazy about how you present yourself to others. Image is key.

You might’ve worn them occasionally (or never) during your undergraduate years, but shirts are common when you start grad school, especially in Europe. European men generally pay great attention to style, and plain shirts are one of the most popular clothing items amongst postgraduate students.

A scarf can totally alter your outfit! For example: if you’re wearing a trench coat with a plain skinny shirt and formal trousers, and you add a scarf to it, it can take you from grad student to stylish employee at a big firm in a matter of seconds! Scarves can make you look truly professional, and are one of the best style tips for grad school!
