The 10 Best Romantic Comedies To Watch
Grab the popcorn, a housemate and a pair of cosy PJs: it’s movie night, and it’s about to get giggly. From 90’s classics to present-day bangers; I’ve picked out the best-of-the-best romantic comedies to watch so you don’t have to.
1. Miss Congeniality
Sandra Bullock kicks ass in this FBI-agent-turns-undercover-pageant-queen classic.
2. The Ugly Truth
Are couples only bound by sex? Watch Gerard Butler try to prove his rather pessimistic theories to the lovelorn Katherine Heigl.
3. Legally Blonde
Behind Reese Witherspoon’s white-toothed smile lies an ab workout in disguise; prepare to clutch your sides with a hell-of-a-lot of laughter. Oh, and there are dogs in it too.
4. 10 Things I Hate About You
Before he donned his Joker face paint, Heath Ledger showed us that he was something of a heartthrob in this teen flick.
5. She’s The Man
Loosely based on Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, let’s pretend we’re watching this hilarious rom-com for educational purposes and not for Channing Tatum’s shirtless torso – no, that would be ridiculous.
6. Clueless
Another film based on a literary classic, Clueless reinvents Jane Austen’s Emma to follow teen queen Cher’s attempts to pair off her friends. Disaster ensues.
7. Mean Girls
Queue the film that bought us Glen Coco: crammed with brilliant one-liners, this high school comedy has become something of a cult-classic.
8. How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days
True to its namesake, watch Kate Hudson try to date and lose her new boyfriend (Matthew McConaughey) within 10 days.
9. Bridget Jones’ Diary
Pride and Prejudice just got a makeover: this cringe-worthy comedy is definitely one to add to the to-watch list (and not just to watch a young Colin Firth and Hugh Grant in that fight scene).
10. 500 Days of Summer
Cute and quirky, this unconventional rom-com defies the traditional boy-gets-girl plotline.
11. Pretty Woman
If it’s got Julia Roberts in it, I’m there. Pretty Woman has it all: laughs, tears and an incredibly catchy soundtrack.
12. Notting Hill
Julia Roberts strikes again, this time with a bumbling Hugh Grant in tow. Quintessentially British, this laugh-out-loud film will have you moving to London in a flash.
13. About Time
Richard Curtis’ latest rom-com is well-deserved of its high praise. Prepare for giggles, sobs and, erm, time travel (not as strange as it sounds).
14. 27 Dresses
Imagine being a bridesmaid twenty seven times. Or just watch this chuckle-packed must-see.
15. Devil Wears Prada
Meryll Streep and Anne Hathaway prove their goddess statuses in this uh-mazing book-turned-film.
