A slightly less traditional Christmas film, The Man Who Invented Christmas tells the story behind Charles Dickens’ creation of his various famous Christmas characters. It’s a surprisingly fresh take on the typical Christmas story, and is a relatively light-hearted film to watch. The film is a little bit confusing, and the storyline could be described as crowded, but the charm and unique idea behind the movie make it well worth a watch anyway. It’s simply a fun way to spend the night.
Arthur Christmas is the only animated film on our list. It’s a nice take for children, answering the question ‘how does Santa really deliver all those presents?’ by adding a modern touch to the traditional tale. It’s almost a Christmas classic (just give it a few years), and leaves you with a warm, fuzzy feeling, whilst still taking enough of a new take on the Christmas story to keep you entertained. Plus, the animation is fantastic, and the script is witty enough to have you laughing out loud.
One of the sweetest Christmas films on netflix we’ve seen, Miracle on 34th Street really brings the charm of Santa Claus to life. It follows the story of ‘real-life Santa Claus’ while he tries to make it in the real world – and convince people who he is. It’s a classic, and you can’t go through the Christmas season without watching the film (at least) once. The whole movie is filled with cheesy 90’s touches, but that’s all part of its charm.
Nativity is another adorably cheesy, if slightly tacky, Christmas films on netflix you always end up watching on Boxing Day. The story line is pretty predictable, but the film has a warm and funny spirit, and is perfect for anyone looking something which perfectly encapsulates the Christmas spirit. It’s storyline can be a little bit unorganised it places, but the movie makes up for this with its simple good-naturedness and positivity. In general, it’s what we all think of when we say ‘Christmas movie’.
What’s better than a plain Christmas? A royal one. Again, the film doesn’t necessarily bring something new to the table – we’ve all watched the story of the Princess before – but it adds a sweet touch of romance and royalty to the festive season. The adorable leading lady of the film falls for the Prince, and we all know how the film will end; that’s doesn’t mean, however, that we can’t enjoy a little romance at this time of year. What better way could you spend Christmas Eve than watching Rose McIvor fall for the gorgeous Ben Lamb, after all.
