Summer makeup looks are all the buzz right now; and in case you haven’t seen, summer’s here! Or it is in Glasgow, at least. Something’s very wrong with the universe because I genuinely think that that’s the first time anyone has ever said that. Ever. Anyway, summer means summer makeup looks, obviously. For me, this means all the highlighter and bronzer I can pile on my face because I start looking like a gold coin. And red lipstick – glossy skin and red lipstick, essentially (spoiler alert). If, like me, you’re stuck in a makeup rut, summer’s a good time to experiment with new looks. Mainly because you’ll most likely be on holiday where no one will actually witness any disasters that may occur. I’ve compiled some fun looks that I will attempt to recreate this summer:
This is the true summer makeup look. Because glossy just a synonym for sweaty. I mean, basically what you want to do, here, is stick your face into a vat of highlighter/be out all day, get sweaty, and claim fashion. Your call. Essentially, what I’m trying to say here is, go. to. town. with that highlighter – a cream highlighter will give you that really glossy, wet-looking, gleaming skin that all the cool kids are rocking. PS: if you’re really oily, go for powder. Or don’t. Like, we are talking w e t here so embrace the oil? Extra brownie points for getting the gloss on your lids, too. Kill two birds with one stone and get a cream AND a highlighter, like this Becca set. Layer them. Blind a small child. Live your best life.

I feel like makeup’s getting a lot simpler these days. Or maybe we’re just getting really lazy and have decided that looking sweaty and sunburnt is cool. This look requires one product for the entire face (well, two, unless you want to use powder as lipstick which you can if you mix it in with lip balm). Dust a peach-toned blush across your cheeks, temples, and the top of your forehead, bringing it across your eyes and nose, too. Blush is a necessity when it comes to a great summer makeup look!

Not really a look anymore, is it, red lips. For some reason ‘red lips are back’ every season… but… they don’t… leave? Ever? Is this some weird existential cycle of eternal return? Is it a capitalist ploy to get us to buy new lipsticks every year? 100%. Without a shadow of a doubt. Here’s what we’re doing with red lipstick in this summer’s makeup looks. You may notice the gloss from no.1 – now you can pair it with a lipstick! Fun! Mac’s Ruby Woo is a great, bright, blue-toned red.

Yeah, no I get the irony, here, too. Listen. You want to do no makeup, you do that. I do that. It’s great. I also like to spend half an hour making myself look like I’m wearing no makeup. This requires about 15 products. I spend that half hour wondering if I truly, truly enjoy makeup, or if I’ve been brainwashed into thinking I do. Anyway, here’s a picture of someone wearing “minimal” makeup:

I love the pop of colour this bright, bright red brings to the face – similar to what we’ve been seeing during the winter with the amalgam and burgundy and ruby red shades, but updated to a bright summer look. Make sure you use the right shade of red for your skin tone, though. Like, be really careful. Otherwise you’ll just look like you’re stoned with pink-eye.

It’s been sunny for about a week now and I’m currently wearing more bronzer than on all the Victoria’s Secret models combined. I’m a very pale girl and fooling absolutely no one. If you want to be like me, remember to bronze the nose, too, for a more natural finish. I like to add a gold eye shadow over the top as highlighter, too. Bronzer is a must for any summer makeup look!

‘Didn’t she already talk about blush?’, you may ask. Yes. Yes I did. Am I trying to come up with enough talking points, here? Maybe. But this is actually different from that peach monochrome makeup. In that you use pink instead of peach, and focus it around your temples:

I mean, sure, brows have been a massive thing for seasons now, as have brushed-up brows. Recently, though, I’ve been seeing girls and guys ditch the pencil completely, opting for a clear or coloured gel to really separate the brows into individual strands – this is perfect for a summer makeup look, as you don’t need to faff about with a zillion products that will just melt off.

This summer makeup look is easily one of the most eye-catching ones, and surprisingly chic. Opt for a matte pastel shadow, and leave the lips bare (although blue and red go together beautifully). Love this palette for some bold and fun summer makeup looks!

A heavy face of makeup is never fun when it’s scorching outside. So, what’re we doing now? Glazing our faces with purples and blues because why not. Look like a glazed donut at a rave. It looks very cool, in all honesty:
