Has anyone noticed the slight drop in temperature in the UK over the last few days? There’s a chill in the air and the sky is going a bit grey. That means Autumn is starting to creep in and for some of us, that means saying goodbye to the denim shorts and summer dresses…or does it? Here are 8 Summer-Autumn Transition Outfits to keep you going for a few more weeks at least.
This is my absolute go to practically every year because you still get to keep the gorgeous summer dresses out and cosy it up with a great pair of boots and usually a good jacket as well. You can still keep it summery by removing the jacket if it gets warms, but with the cool chill in the air as Autumn starts to appear, the jacket will come in handy for covering up goosebumpy arms and the boots give the outfit a bit of edge. This is the perfect summer-autumn transition outfit.
This one is great for starting to work in your autumn colours. A nice indigo pair of jeans would work well with a neutral camisole and comfy grey cardigan. Much like the previous outfit, it’s great for being able to remove and add the cardigan for more or less warmth. And the great thing about the neutral colours is that autumnal colours can be added to it, like a brown bag for example. The jeans keep everything casual but the outfit is still chic.
Denim shorts and tights was an outfit made for this exact time of year. The look was pretty much coined by the queen of style Alexa Chung herself and it’s a way of maintaining your denim shorts without having to freeze yours legs off as a result of wearing them. Not to mention with the monochromatic colours of the shorts and tights, you can pretty much get away with any shirt you want. A patterned one, a plain one, even a jumper would work with this look later on in the year so keep this look in mind for when you’re looking to transition for Summer to Autumn.
A suede skirt is the perfect transitional piece between summer and autumn. A tan one is great because it goes with a lot of different colours, but it’s also an autumn shade and they come in various lengths so if you want to pick one up for colder months then that’s possible. Pair a shorter skirt with a roll neck jumper and it’s a nice balance creating a good level of warmth that’s not too hot or too cold. Plus, it’s a pretty stylish outfit that can’t go wrong for summer-autumn transitions.
It’s everyone’s September go to outfit. Dungarees are one of best items of clothing to keep in your closet because they’re a versatile piece. To keep wearing them through what remains of summer and then again as Autumn approaches pair them underneath a long sleeved top, or better yet buy one in several different colours so you can mix and match everyday of the week. A black or white top looks classic under a pair of overalls, whereas muted colours might pair better with the end of summer and beginning of autumn. Either way it’s a good way to transition from one season to the next.
Jeans are an easy peasy item to put anything with, and since everyone is on this double denim trend craze a brightly coloured denim jacket might be the best (and easy) way to transition from one season into another. With a black or white t-shirt underneath, it’ll really bring out the colour of the bright denim jacket and it’ll be an easy way to start working in you Autumn wardrobe. Pick up a cranberry corduroy jacket, or a burnt orange denim jacket – you’ll be able to transition and keep it out for the rest of autumn.
When the temperature starts to drop midi skirts will be your best weapon. They cover the legs far enough that it’ll prevent goosebumps (and shaving 3/4 of your legs in mid autumn) but the tee keeps everything cool and stylish. Not to mention as the warm weather ceases, that tee can turn into a long sleeved top or even a jumper and suddenly you’ve got yourself a nice autumn to winter transition outfit. Keep the colours muted, if you want to stay cool in temperatures because those colours will also translate to autumn.
I don’t know how many times I’ve relied on this outfit around this time of year. It’s a fail safe. A good old pair of high waisted jeans (any kind), a shirt (any kind) tucked in and an over shirt buttoned half way up over the top (tucked in or out). It’s a great look for anyone and the best transitional outfit because of the handy over shirt. It can be taken off and wrapped around the waist, untucked and worn loose or tucked in. Any shirt will do, and you can’t really go wrong – so it’s the perfect summer to autumn outfit.
