Starting Over: What To Do After Uni

Starting over can always be a stressful moment in anyone’s life. Whether it’s what people expect of you or what you think you must be doing, it doesn’t have to be scary. Putting yourself first is crucial in figuring out your next move.

Here is some advice on what to do after uni and where you might begin.

Apply For Jobs

Apply for jobs as often and quick as you can. Whether it’s a job you want for the weekend, a job you don’t see yourself in or a career that isn’t even related to your degree.

Having a job is a way to keep money in your bank account so you can start saving up. And who know? You might get a job that you love and might be a career that you want to be doing for the rest of your life.

Don’t pay too much attention to the course you took in uni, because you might even realize that after uni you didn’t have much interest in it anyways.

Don’t Stress

Whatever you do, or whatever you don’t do, there is no need to stress.

Stressing yourself out will not help you figure things out. Take things easy and sit down with yourself to think things through. Now that you’ve finished uni, do you have any idea on what you want your next move to be?

If you don’t it’s okay, that’s why you should take a few weeks off to re-evaluate your decisions and actually think about what you want to do.

If you don’t want a career to do with your degree, it’s not the end of the world. Everyone starts over all the time, and finishing uni is kind of like that. What comes after uni can be daunting, yes, but it doesn’t have to be stressful for you.

And if it is stressful, it’s because you want yourself to succeed. You might have high expectations, but you’ve got to work for it in the end.

Make A Plan

Without stressing yourself out more, sit down. Take the summer off after uni to make a plan.

Are you going to focus on a day-to-day job while searching for your chosen career? Are you going to travel? Whatever you do, do not quit your day job so you have some sort of income to keep you afloat.

You’re still young and if you want to spend a few months or years trying to figure your next move out, that’s understandable, as long as you don’t make a habit of procrastinating your whole future.

Sit down and make a plan of where you see yourself in 2 years, in 5 years and maybe 10 years.

So, what do you have to do to get there?

Be your own hero.

Do What You Want To Do

There will be a lot of people trying to influence your decisions, whether it’s your family pressuring you about getting a job or your friends pumping you up immensely.

At the end of the day, you will spend your entire life unhappy if you don’t go with your gut feeling. Whatever you choose to do, remember that even if you end up disappointing a few people, you won’t be letting yourself down.

Make your own path and make choices that reflect you as a person. Do what you want to do as long as it makes you happy.

You don’t have to rush everything in one week.

It’s Okay To Move Back In With Your Parents

It’s scary to say that you’ll be moving back in with your parents after uni, but if you have no other choice, or you choose to do so while you try to get back on your feet, it’s okay.

Do not let anyone judge you for that, because your parents are there to support you through thick and thin. Especially if you studied uni in another country and you can’t afford to live there at the moment, go back home for a few months and see what comes next.

Live day by day and don’t be upset about the situation you’re in. You can still be independent while living under someone else’s roof.

Save up and spend cautiously. Before you know it you’ll be up and at it once again.

Don’t Make Any Rash Decisions

This one is tricky, because sometimes the spontaneous decisions you take happen to be the best decisions of your life. However, it’s also like a double-edged sword. On the other hand, if you make the wrong decision, you will be regretting and wondering how you got where you did.

After uni, you should be cautious of any decision you make, even if you feel like you should be living life to the fullest.

You can still do that while still paying attention to your needs and taking it slow.

Life Doesn’t Always Turn Out How You Want It To Be, And That’s Okay

If you didn’t think you’d be where you are after uni, don’t let it bother you. We all make plans and we all dream ourselves in scenarios that have not happened yet. We might not know when they will happen, but as long as we keep on striving for that endgame, it might happen.

Life never turns out how we want it to be, but sometimes that’s a good thing. Sometimes that smallest of surprises are what make our lives better.

We keep evolving and growing and our feelings change constantly. What we view our future as might not be what we want it to look like tomorrow, a week from now or a year from now.

You have to live every day to the fullest and take what comes at you with a new point of view.

Now that you’ve graduated uni, you’ve got something to be proud of.

Enjoy this moment.
