Relationships are already hard enough, let alone distance ones- Here are some tips for those of you who starting a long distance relationship to pass through this rocky road. All the tears, confusion & frustration might be worth it in the end.
Even if distance is a barrier between you and your significant other, communication has to remain clear and consistent. If you want your relationship to work out in the long term and eventually meet up in real life, you will both have to make the same effort to talk and be as clear as possible with your intentions and thoughts. If you see that there’s communication issues, try calling him/her & work things out slowly.
When starting a long distance relationship, we tend to over think all the time. What is he/she doing ? Who is he/she with? Why is he/she taking so long to answer back? Yep, its a struggle. But you should be able to manage your thoughts and not over stress the small things, it’s usually nothing. Even if he/she is hiding something, you will eventually find out. So stay calm, move on, and if things are meant to be, he/she will let you know soon or later.
When you first meet someone, especially on the internet, you don’t really know what to expect so people often tend to lie or make things sound better than they actually are. However, Little lies can sometimes be the most dangerous, so be careful what you say and pick your words carefully, as you don’t yet know the person on the other end and you want to get to know them better before making assumptions or spilling out the beans about your feelings or yourself.
Always take some time to yourself , to think about the relationship and the reasons why you feel like keeping in touch with that person. If you can’t find enough reasons it might not be the right one for you, but if you’re 98% sure you want to meet that person in real life one day, then it’s most likely true feelings. You have to listen to yourself, more than what your friends or family think of it.
This might sound a bit cheesy, but it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself-So many people change their personalities and even looks for someone they think they love, and expect to be more attractive to that person by doing so. But that is a HUGE mistake, if you want to meet your soulmate, the best you can do is be yourself and not pretend to be something you are not !
It can be hard to get to know someone more, especially if there is a language barrier. Guess that’s the perfect time to get to know each other’s culture more, and maybe even learn each other’s language. It will be a challenge, but most likely a rewarding one.
Expect to be misunderstood a lot, and vice-versa. It’s already not so easy to talk face to face so imagine online behind a screen. There will be times when you feel like giving up, but one of you will persist , this is a good sign. it means he/she cares about you and keeping in touch. Don’t give up on small details like that.
Starting a long distance relationship might seem like stepping on eggs, but there will be a lot of learning and rewards along the way. So be prepared for a bumpy roller coaster ride full of up and downs, tears and laughter. All of it will be worth it once you get into an in real life relationship, it might be a bit easier to communicate but there will still be surprises , like in any social relationships. Expect the unexpected & don’t have high expectations as it might disappoint you in the end.
In a nutshell, don’t beat yourself up if it didn’t work out the way you planned it. This was an experience you learned from and there’s plenty of fish in the sea for you.
