10 Space Saving Garden Ideas For City Living

Living in a small apartment or town house in the city doesn’t mean you can’t have a garden despite having limited space – you just need to get tricky with some space saving garden ideas. While there are limits to what you can and cannot grow indoors and how much space you can use to grow your garden, you can still have a fully functional garden.

There are things you need to consider when starting an apartment garden such as where to get the best light, what you can grow in your city’s climate and the types of plants that you will have time to take care of. Some tips for growing plants in apartments is to use your food scraps as composts, invest in herbs, use healthy soil and use lamps for extra light.

If you are struggling fitting a garden in your limited space here are 10 space saving garden ideas for city living!

1. Garden Tower

The first space saving garden hack we have for you city livers is a garden tower. Garden towers are the perfect way to save space by ultimately stacking your plants up in one tall pot, instead of having multiple short pots. Vertical garden towers are an excellent way to grow different plants – vegetables, fruit, leafy greens and herbs – all in the one place.

2. Hanging Garden

Another space saving garden idea is to have a hanging garden. Hanging gardens utilise unused and stagnant space from the ceiling. They can be against the wall, floating in a room or from a curtain pole, or hanging outside. These are perfect for plants like tomatoes that are vine-like.

3. Balcony Garden

Make the most of the little outside space that you have but turning your balcony into a garden sanctuary. Use all of the space on your balcony by placing pots around the floor, hanging plants up and stacking pots on outdoor furniture.

4. Window Box

Use the space outside your window for another space saving garden technique. Get a window box and plant vegetables and fruits that need lots of sunlight and space to grow. This is a perfect way to find garden when you don’t have any outdoor space.

5. Railing Garden

If you have a small balcony with a railing or have railing outside your apartment from the stairs, then you can take advantage of that with a railing garden. Get pots that can hook over your railing and put all of that unused space to work.

6. Mobile Garden

If you have a small apartment you might have space that would fit a garden, but that space also serves multiple purposes. With this next space saving garden idea, you can get a mobile garden on wheels so that when you need that space for something else you can move it around.
