Everybody wants to travel but not everyone will do it alone, the way wanderlusters do, but there is a sense of wanderlust in all of us, to see the rest of the world in all its glory. The idea of travelling alone can be scary, daunting, and exciting at the same time, and that’s exactly why travel is so fun. Here are 15 of the best solo travel trips that every wanderlust or anyone who is thinking about travelling it alone should try out:

1. Barcelona, Spain

A perfect place to relax, sight-see, and have fun. Barcelona has great beaches, amazing nightlife, fascinating sights and architecture, and as an added bonus the Catalonian people are so welcoming so you will fit right in.

2. Dublin, Ireland

The Irish are known as some of the friendliest people in the world, so whether you want to visit the historic sights alone or find an Irish friend to take you on a  tour or a Temple Bar pub crawl, either way you will have the best time on this solo travel trip!

3. Bologna, Italy

A University town, so locals are always welcoming visitors. Visit the many historical and cultural sites of this medieval town with the Bologna welcome card, which is 20 euros and gives you 48 hours access to museums and city tours. Go where the locals go for food and drink to get the best quality, and I’m sure you will get your money’s worth.

It may be one of the smallest countries in the world but it does not lack things to do. The heritage and culture is everywhere in Malta, so there is never a dull sight. Although most of the cities are full of culture, Valletta is actually this year’s European capital of culture, so it should not disappoint with its sights, beaches, and funky bars. This small country definitely may turn out to be one of your favorite solo travel trips!

5. Reykjavik, Iceland

Many people say Iceland should be your first solo travel destination, as it is one of the safest countries in the world. It is also such a beautiful place and there are so many things to do, such as see the natural phenomenons on the famous Golden Circle tour, followed by the Blue Lagoon, a beautiful geothermal spa that will help you relax after your adventures around Iceland.

There are so many sights to see in Greece that the best thing to do is island hop. Starting with Athens and its variety of ancient history, it also has great nightlife, which could be the best way to make some Greek friends. If you wish to go island hopping, the best islands for solo travellers are: Crete, Kos, Mykonos, and Santorini. Although there are many more if you plan on travelling as much of the Greek islands as possible.

7. New York City, USA

The city is a fast-paced, sightseeing and shopping haven with great nightlife. Although you do actually get a chance to sleep, considering it is the city that never sleeps, as nightclubs actually close at 2am, which confuses some tourists, but that just gives you time to recover for another day of adventure. Locals tend to escape the city and go to the beaches in The Hamptons, which are just a bus or train ride away if you decide you need a break from the city. NYC will definitely one of the most memorable solo travel trips!

8. Montreal, Canada

A great place for one of your solo travel trips with plenty of sightseeing, Non-stop festivals, shopping, and great food. Make sure you put climbing Mont Royal on your list, as it has great views, and try to catch a Cirque Du Soleil show, after all it is the shows home turf.   

9. The East Coast, Australia

One of the best ways to travel solo in Australia is by hopping on a tour. There are a variety of different tours, with the Greyhound buses being the most well-known, as they are extremely flexible, with various different routes catered to what you want to see including: Sydney, Melbourne, Cairns, Fraser Island, Whitsundays and many more. 

10. South Island, New Zealand

There is so much to do in New Zealand you need somewhere to start, so the South Island it is. It has plenty natural sights to see including: Milford Sound, where you can try and reach the mitre peak. Other stop offs should include the city of Nelson, Queenstown, The Catlins, and the Franz Josef Glacier, just a few places where you can embark on an adventure.

This is one of the world’s top surfing destinations so even if you have never surfed in your life, you could come home a seasoned surfer. Yoga is also very popular in A-Bay, downward dog anyone? The best way to explore the bay is rent a scooter so you can visit the amazing beaches, Panama Tank, Kumana National Park – where you can go on safari, and of course the nightlife – get yourself to Whiskey Point Fridays, make some friends, and leave the scooter at home.

There is plenty to do as a solo travellers in this island paradise including: scuba diving, visit the Tabon Caves, the underground river, the beautiful beaches, eat amazing local food, visit Starfish Island, Go pearl shopping, or go off the beaten track to many other sites which you don’t want to miss.

13. Chiang Mai, Thailand

Starting with your first ride on a tuk tuk, the adventures are endless in Chiang Mai from eating the amazing thai cuisine to visiting temples, lounging at the exquisite beaches to bathing elephants, and maybe even eating an century egg. Would you try out this Asian tradition?

It is a great place to travel solo due to the easy access to public transport, whether you use it to go shopping, explore the nightlife, or even to be at one with nature at the Botanical Gardens or Nature Reserves, there will never be a dull moment on this one of your solo travel trips! 

15. Lombok and the Gilli islands, Indonesia

Gilli Trawangan, Gilli Meno, and Gilli Air are the definition of paradise which you can actually walk around in under two hours if you wish to. Although your best bet is to island hop on the public boats, which leave the islands twice a day. If you are looking for the best nightlife Gilli Trawangan is the best place to go, although if its live music you are after head to Gilli Meno’s beach bars. Make sure to visit Mount Rinjani or Mount Agung to see spectacular views across the Indonesian islands. Let your wanderlust lead the way.
