Summer is upon us at last – no doubt you want to set the scene and stand out among your peers with the trendiest styles money can buy. It’s true, most of us cannot afford the most luxurious looks money can buy, although here we offer the next best thing. Here’s Society19’s exclusive Guide On How To Avoid Looking Cheap This Summer!
Bright colours, floral designs and embellished décor are attractive on the eye but sadly, they lack longevity, something you want to be mindful of to avoid looking cheap. There’s no need to compete with the guy with the Versace bomber jacket, there will be plenty more who try and fail. Stick with basic, faithful colours that suit you. Bear in mind that darker colours will inevitably fade and shirts adorned with jewels with sooner or later be missing a few.
White and cream colours are sensible options for summer and no one will hate you for it. Avoid logos and faux-surfer prints like the plague – they are only really commercial stunts and don’t enhance your look much, if at all.
It’s only natural to strip down to your shorts and bare chest in the summer, however, unless you plan to spend all summer scouring the sands, it is very impractical. Sweaty Hawaiian shirts stick out like a sore thumb and are too generic. Trade in heavier clothing and materials for lighter fabrics- cotton tops are ideal for keeping cool as well as retaining some modesty. Slim denim jackets are also in style and won’t break the bank.
The best summer looks are often variations of winter clothing with fewer layers. Sandals and flip flops are also very stereotypical and overrated – you will be much better served sticking to a decent pair of trainers with socks. A cotton white Cuban shirt garnished with a simple gold wristwatch can steal the scene just as well as that Armani blazer.
Summer is an ideal time to experiment with existing styles and you may have all the ingredients you need in your repertoire already. Shun the designer wear and look deep into recesses of your wardrobe – perhaps it’s your dad’s old band t-shirt or an old pair of swimmers you wore on that holiday years ago. Retro is making a resurgence nowadays and with enough conviction, you can pull off the look.
Remember, it’s in a shop’s interest to put a pair of shorts on you – just because it is available doesn’t mean you have to buy it. Rather those Prada cargo shorts, which are mainly more pocket than leg, why not try Hems, which are far more comfortable and practical.
Crucially, you must have pride and dignity in your style and how you maintain your wardrobe. Trim those shaggy locks for a neater, sharper look and don’t forget to comb every day, style your hair regularly to look polished. Slicking your hair back will highlight your forehead and facial features and cover any potential recessions.
When buying new clothes, always ensure they fit perfectly – excess bagginess looks cheap and tight clothing will only expose bumps and rice pudding bellies. Remember to take care of your existing wardrobe: wear and tear such as missing shirt buttons, creases and stains will draw unwanted attention and are schoolboy errors. Show your H&M jumper the same love as you would your Gucci Loafers and it will look better for far longer.
Summer doesn’t have to be like Christmas, as many men treat it. It doesn’t have to consist of comedy clothing and festive notions, rather your style choice should be comfortable and practical above all. Wise choices will help you avoid looking cheap and you can reflect back with rose tinted goggles.
