As soon as the weather hits 10 degrees and above I switch up my breakfast routine. Smoothies and smoothie bowls and my number one go-to breakfast meal from spring into summer, and I love getting up in the morning to make them. There are so many to choose from and they can be as exciting, simple, or easy as you wish them to be!
Here are 5 smoothie bowl ideas that I hope will help brighten your summer mornings:
Nothing screams ‘millennial breakfast’ more than a smoothie bowl featuring avocado. But it truly is a wonderful addition to any smoothie bowl due to its thick and creamy consistency. Paired with blueberries (one of my favorite fruits), this smoothie bowl recipe is packed with healthy fats and antioxidants. The beauty of this breakfast treat is that you really can mix and match. Add in or remove whatever you want! I do love the toppings suggested for this one though, I mean, I’m never going to say no to a little chocolate in the morning.
There are so many protein-based smoothie bowls you can make, but for me, something that tastes like an incredible cold chocolate pudding ate first thing on a warm summer morning just sounds like bliss. This recipe features cocoa powder which is a great source of polyphenols – a type of micronutrient that contains many health promoting properties. Much like the blueberries above, plant polyphenols are rich in antioxidants!
Want to add an extra protein kick to your smoothie bowl? I’ve recently stumbled across Form Nutrition, a plant-based protein brand. The results I’ve had through incorporating their Tiramisu Performance Protein Powder into my diet have been immense and I adore their products. I add one to two scoops of their powder to my morning smoothie bowl to aid muscle recovery on big work out days.
This smoothie recipe is based upon one that a company in St Andrews (where I study) used to make. It’s fresh, fruity, and fantastic!
What you need: 2 handfuls of frozen raspberries, 2-3 fresh strawberries, 1 handful crushed ice, 300-500ml of apple juice (test yourself depending on how thick you want it to be), 5 basil leaves, 2 tablespoons of plain dairy or non-dairy yogurt.
The basil in this smoothie recipe just makes it. It’s definitely one of the freshest smoothie bowls I’ve ever had and so is the perfect breakfast choice to help brighten your summer mornings.
I got to know acai bowls over the past year or so and absolutely love them. Though the taste of the actual smoothie bowl is pretty standard as most acai powder packets taste the same, the fun here is really with the toppings. Acai bowls encourage you to get super creative with toppings! Some of my favorites include cacao nibs, goji berries, honey nutty granola, and coconut chips.
You can get acai powder online, even from Amazon, and many brands offer acai puree packs too which can, I believe, be frozen and taken out to blend whenever you please.
What better flavor to blend into your smoothie bowl than something resembling the sunshine we’re all craving this summer? This smoothie bowl is a perfect example of how easy it is to sneak veggies into your breakfast. This recipe features 1/2 – 1 carrot, and I promise you, you won’t notice it’s in there. I love adding handfuls of spinach to my smoothies! I have recently discovered a brunch spot that does the most perfect avocado-celery-apple and cayenne pepper smoothie! With this bad boy, you’ll be smiling for days – probably because you’ve just had to perfect dose of vitamin C and you’re skin will be glowing.
