1. Kinky hair has very tight coils

Our hair is made up of really tight coils. It mainly forms an s-shaped or a z-shaped curl pattern that is easily recognizable. Those coils are fine and fragile by nature so you should treat them with care.

Unlike other hair types, it’s not recommended for us to wash our hair every day unless your hair is really dirty. The reason is that washing them to often can dry out your hair and your scalp. But, if you still wish to wash your hair more often you can try to use a co-wash.

3. It takes forever to dry

This hair type takes the longest amount of time to dry. And it’s really annoying, to be honest. Some of us wait for hours, even days for our hair to dry. You can speed up the process by using a diffuser or a hair dryer without damaging your hair.

Kinky hair needs moisture as it breaks easily. However, this is something you have to do regularly has the moisture tends to get quickly absorbed by the hair. This is the reason a lot of girls adopted the LOC (or LCO) methods to maximize moisture retention so we can go for days without the need to remoisturized our coils every day.

6. This hair type shrinks a lot

Kinky hair is often subject to shrinkage. This means it can shrink up to 90% of its original length. But, contrary to what people believe, shrinkage is actually a good thing, it’s proof that your hair is healthy and shows that your hair is properly moisturized and has elasticity. Not everyone loves it though! You can try to prevent it by doing Bantu knots, braids, twists or other hairstyles to stretch your hair.

6. Kinky hair defies gravity

The first thing you notice about this type of hair is that it doesn’t fall down but instead in an afro because of its coily nature. Of course, there are some exceptions as some kinky hair fall down.

Kinky hair gets tangled very easily. The best way to detangle it is to use your favorite detangling product and comb through your knots with a wide tooth comb or simply your fingers.

Our hair is naturally frizzy and frankly quite annoying. It usually appears when our hair is dehydrated and our cuticles start raising to make our hair look dry and frizzy. We can try to reduce frizz by using the right products, avoiding harsh cleansers, making sure our hair stays moisturize and trimming ou hair regularly.

If you have this hair type you must be experienced with breakage. Kinky hair is more prone to breakage than any other hair type as it’s dry and delicate by nature. It requires to be manipulated with care.
