10 Signs You Grew Up In Plymouth England And Are Proud Of It

Most probably spending much of your childhood exploring Plymouth Hoe, enjoying ice creams and chips whilst looking out to sea. Keep reading to discover 15 signs you grew up in Plymouth.

Enjoying an ice-cream, no matter what the Weather

Living by the water, we are lucky to have an abundance of ice cream vans lined up across the water front, more commonly known as the Hoe. A classic favourite is the good old Mr Whippy. Best enjoyed with a flake, or maybe some clotted cream if you are feeling extra cheeky.  This seaside classic is enjoyed by Plymothians year-round. If you go there, even in the middle of December, you are sure to find a number of cars parked up enjoying an ice-cream, looking out to sea. This is one of the many signs you grew up in Plymouth.

The wind and rain of a city-based town

Although England itself is sometimes known for its bad weather. I have to say, Plymouth itself, being a seaside town, is known for its warm welcome even in the  wind and rain. Sure enough, nothing would stop us Plymothians enjoying our day, whatever it may be.

Going for a dip

Fortunately, Plymouth is known for their open-air swimming pool, the Tinside Lido. I am sure many Plymothians during their childhood enjoyed meeting with friends on a sunny day, or maybe a not so sunny day in a wet suit enjoying the slightly cold water.

Explaining where you come from:

If you are lucky enough to travel abroad, I am sure many of you have had the comment. “where are you from then?”  You then spend your time explaining how no, you don’t live near London, but in a place called Plymouth in Devon, then for them to say “Oh I haven’t heard of that.”

The famous sundial

For many years, the sundial played a vital part as a place to throw pennies in, or more than likely as a place for meeting your friends, or to sit whilst your other half shops. It serves many purposes! This is one of the many signs you grew up in Plymouth.

The Mayflower Steps

Probably one of Plymouth’s most famous landmarks, are the Mayflower Steps is where the Pilgrims are believed to have sailed from to America.
