1. Every road sign, email, webpage, etc., is twice as long as ones in England.
When you first arrive at Cardiff, you might be shocked by the amount of correspondences you initially receive: residency forms, GP registration, contact details… all that jazz. Only at second glance will you realise that you (probably) can’t understand the second half! There’s nothing like a Welsh translation to fully immerse you in Cardiff culture.
2. You’re in a pub watching the Welsh rugby team with a Wales t-shirt and a sheep hat for disguise.
3. You’ve tried three varieties of Glamorgan sausage.
What better way to get a taste for the vale than to sample some of the county’s finest grub? One sniff of those cheesy leeks and you’ll be away…
4. You made Welsh cakes for the first time on Saint David’s Day.
After all those savoury sausages, you’ll be craving something sweet. Why not satisfy the craving while embracing a Welsh culinary emblem?

The BBC does loads of filming in Cardiff so who knows what you’ll appear in the background of! With camera crews and actors’ trailers, there’s no shortage of broadcasting bliss. Students even encountered Benedict Cumberbatch in Cardiff’s very own SU!
10. You experience rain, sunshine, clouds, hail and gales all in one day!
The stress of lectures and seminars can be tough, especially with the weather having a breakdown of its own! You are advised to carry umbrellas, raincoats and sunglasses with you at all times.
11. You’re a tourist at Barry Island.
It’s only a half hour train journey away, but the Island is the source of every Cardiff student’s beach break. A trip to the seaside is a sure-fire sign you go to Cardiff University.
12. You can’t sleep because of seagulls mouthing off at 3 a.m.!
Cardiff’s proximity to the sea has its disadvantages: one being migrating seagulls. You’ve just got in from that crazy night out and your bed is calling, but as soon as your head hits the pillow… shriek! You’re facing that 10 a.m. lecture before you know it.

No matter what day of the week, Hoffi Coffi is always heaving with students. With great food and drink, comfy chairs and a friendly environment, it’s easy to see why it’s a student hot spot.
16. Your student ID becomes a VIP card.
Cringey photos aside, that little piece of plastic grants you entrance to Y Plas as well as cheaper tickets at the cinema (£3!! Note: purchase cheap snacks beforehand at Lidl), the theatre (only £5 for plays) and the castle (castle key card only one £5 payment then go as much as you want in three years upon showing student ID).
17. You can’t hear the words “Swansea Uni” without feeling an immense amount of South Walean rivalry.
