Do You And Your SO Speak The Same Love Language?

Relationships have to be a blessing and never a curse. If you’re unhappy in a relationship, then you should analyse the warning signs and establish better communication with your partner. Understanding each other is key to a successful love life, which is why it’s so important to be on the same page. Do you and your SO speak the same love language? Find out how to improve your relationship and learn to better understand your loved one by mastering these 5 love languages:

1. Quality time

Example: you have cleared a busy schedule to spend the weekend with your SO

This love language is extremely important, especially in the modern world, where we are so often distracted by things that don’t really matter. Quality time is just about you and your partner, nothing else. Spending time with one another can really help improve your communication and allow you to better understand your partner’s needs. It is crucial that your quality time is uninterrupted, otherwise it loses its significance. This means getting rid of all distractions (yes, that includes phones) and solely focusing on your partner. If both partners do this in the relationship then you definitely speak the same love language!

2. Gifts

Example: your partner stops off to get you flowers on the way to see you

Giving your SO gifts shouldn’t be reserved for special occasions – it should be spontaneous. You could argue that gifts are just material items, but most of the time it isn’t even the gift itself that is most important. What matters is that you’ve put time and thought into finding something that is going to put a smile on your partner’s face. You’ll be surprised by how far such a small act of kindness and appreciation can go – just give this love language a try!

3. Acts of service (deeds)

Example: you wake up early to help your partner prepare for work

Doing something for your partner may seem like a trivial love language, but it can really help foster a more intimate relationship with them. By demonstrating selflessness and being considerate, you can really show your SO how much you care about them. As with the previous love language, this one works great when it’s done spontaneously. Don’t worry about coming up with something special – just give up a bit of your time to do something nice for your partner. A kind gesture or just some help will be much appreciated.

4. Physical touch

Example: you give your partner a hug before you leave the house

Physical touch does not have to be all about sex, although that is also an important part of a healthy relationship. Many people mistakingly think that the only kind of physicality that is valid is the one that leads to intercourse; in fact, any kind of physical intimacy is a crucial part of this love language. Your SO will be pleasantly surprised by something as simple as a hug or a hand squeeze, which will in turn put a smile on their face and reaffirm their physical connection to you. It’s a great way to demonstrate your love and affection. Test it out by just giving them a random hand squeeze, if they reciprocate it, then there’s a good chance you speak the same love language!

5. Words of affirmation

Example: your partner says “I’m so lucky to have you” when you wake up in the morning

Words are really important in a relationship because they are the main means of communication. What you say and how you say it can have a big impact on your partner’s happiness. Mastering this love language isn’t difficult – it just requires attention to detail. Your choice of words can say a lot about how you feel, and your SO will greatly appreciate all of the things that you say which affirm your love for them. Obviously something as simple as an “I love you” is great, but try to be more creative – don’t forget to praise your partner’s qualities and make them see how much you value their company.
