5 Romantic Summer Reads For All The Lovebirds Out There

When you have the whole summer holidays to yourself, there is nothing better than to get through a book, or two, or three! There are so many genres to choose from, but nothing can beat a summer read like a romance novel – there is nothing we would rather do on our holidays than lie on the beach and have a good summer romance to immerse ourselves into. With so many different romance books to choose from, we get that it can be hard to choose which one to pick up first, so we have compiled a list of five amazing, romantic summer reads to help you find your next favourite novel.

1. The Classic Romance

If you haven’t already read The Great Gatsby, what have you been doing with your life? This book, which is narrated from outsider Nick, follows the troubled romance of Daisy and Jay Gatsby. This is one of the most classic romance books, filled with the ups and down which love brings into our lives. Not only is the romance in this novel breathtaking, but the backdrop of the New York high class in the 1920’s and the drama between old and new money adds another level to this romance novel.

2. The Dark Romance

Sometimes you just want to escape to a romance that is a lot darker and more sexual than the normal romance novel, and even though Fifty Shades of Grey has been through the ringer with the jokes and bad reviews, it became popular for a reason. If you want a book which is filled with sexual tension and kinks to fill your summer with sexual fantasies, this is a great book for you. However, if you are someone who is bothered by bad grammar and writing, you may want to avoid this.

3. The Romantic Comedy

Bridget Jones’s Diary is one of the funniest romantic comedy’s out there, with Helen Fielding’s novel following the inner thoughts of protagonist Bridget Jones through the form of her diary. After a catastrophic New Year’s Eve, Bridget decides that she is going to remake herself by losing weight, quit smoking and getting herself a boyfriend. She eventually ends up in a love triangle between bad boy Daniel Cleaver and straight man Mark Darcy, and her inner dialogue of the situation makes it absolutely hilarious.

4. The LGBT Romance

If you are wanting to read a book which doesn’t focus on the heterosexual relationship, why not try Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda? This novel, which is the basis for 2018’s breakout film Love, Simon, follows closeted high schooler Simon as he tries to figure out how and when to come out, while he falls in love with an anonymous boy from his school who he has been emailing. If you love books which follow teen and LGBT romances, then this is the book for you.

5. The Teen Romance

If you haven’t heard the hype around the Netflix original movie To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, where have you been over the past year? The breakout movie was actually based on Jenny Han’s book of the same name, which is a three-part series and goes much more into the story than the film does. The plot follows Lara Jean Song Covey, a sixteen-year-old keeps love letters to all the boys she has ever loved in a teal hatbox given to her by her late mother – one of the boys of whom is the boyfriend of her sister and best friend who has just left for university.
