We all need a little pick-me-up after a breakup and normally we seek it in the form of a rom-com. However, we need to be careful, we can’t have anything too sweet and romantic which will end up making us feel worse. We need strong female leads, relatable storylines, and a romance to instill hope in us for future times.
So here we have a list of the 6 best rom-coms to soothe a broken heart; I’ve tried to stay away from the generic films like Legally Blonde and Bridget Jones’s Diary, but by all means, watch those too. A little blonde-girl empowerment won’t hurt.
Pretty Woman is an underrated classic in my opinion, but I could be biased because it is one of my favourite films. Julia Roberts teaches girls watching that they deserve the fairytale relationship no matter their past, even if they were a hooker. And I think that could be a vital sentiment to drill into your mind post-break up.
You deserve the best. You deserve everything you’ve ever dreamed off. Don’t settle for less.
It is an unlikely female empowerment film, but an amazing one.
Julia Roberts plays Vivian, a hooker on the streets of Los Angeles. She meets Edward, Richard Gere, who is a wealthy business man. Both teach each other new things, expose each other to new feelings and make each other a better person.
But Vivian won’t settle for less, even with his wealth, she wants the fairy tale. Nothing more, nothing less.
Any why should she? And why should you? This film will teach you to stay strong, and stay away from going back to a relationship where you weren’t appreciated.
You also get hilarious scenes among the romance, for instance Vivian returns to an up-market shop where she was refused service due to the way she looked, to only rub in the sales assistants face the commission she had missed out on.
A classy film with a dark twist, and one definitely worth watching to inspire you with a strong woman lead.
Moving on to a more comedy centred rom-com, Girls Trip is the best film to sit and watch with your BFF’s. This film demonstrates that your friends are always going to be there to support you and get you through the hard times, especially when your husband is cheating on you.
Queen Latifah, Regina Hall, Jada Pinkett-Smith and Tiffany Haddish are the friends we wish we all had. Although normally every group has a Dina (Tiffany Haddish) in their group, there is always a crazy one.
Watch as these 4 girls get up to mischief, partying the weekend away as they rediscover their true selves.
There are drunken fights and fall outs, as well as hilarious scenes like the girls zip lining over the street to only let loose on all those below.
Some of it can be cringy comedy, but it’s worth watching as by the end of the film you’ll have laughed a lot and know that no break-up is worth you losing yourself over. You are strong, and can get through anything.
So go get your friends and have fun.
P.s. If you are unfamiliar with the grapefruit method, you won’t be by the end of the film. That scene can scar you!
Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone did a film before La La Land, and I must say, their chemistry in this rom-com is a lot better.
Crazy, Stupid Love gives you everything. You have a couple going through divorce, the life of the bachelor picking up girls every night, the new love, and the unrequited love.
Depending on what you are going through, depends on what you will take away from this film.
A newly single male can learn how to become that bachelor that gets the girl. Ryan Gosling imparts words of wisdom on how to be successful to Steve Carell, a man left by his wife.
But for those looking for a deeper connection to the film, you’ll see that the main point to be taken away is don’t lose sight of who you are in a relationship.
Chances are if you have just broken up from a long-term relationship, you will have lost yourself slightly. You won’t be the same as at the beginning, you won’t have been putting the same effort into you or the relationship.
Steve Carell shows you what it’s like when you get too comfortable in a relationship, but also how you always have to put the effort into a relationship. Even after 25 years of marriage.
The film could give you closure if you are unclear as to why you split, you could identify with some of the problems before you. But better, you are shown how to move on from it.
Whether that is through becoming the man in the town, or just a family man wanting to fight for his family to stay together.
Crazy, Stupid Love gives you a lot. Including Ryan Gosling being naked for a large majority of it.
And if you are unsure whether to give this film ago, just know that the closing scenes are brilliant. I was laughing so hard I couldn’t breathe, it shows you the difference between males and females.
How many men have you slept with? What is your ‘number’? This film will not only have you laughing from start to finish but will teach you as you through that you split up with your ex for a reason. It’s not going to magically work the second time round if you go back.
Anna Faris and Chris Evans make an amazing team as they track down the 20 people she has slept with, trying to find her future husband.
This is such an underrated rom-com, one that should be watched by all for the pure hilarious moments that play out. Including how many times Anna Farris can run into her actual husband, Chris Pratt, throughout the film.
Also, watch the worst English accent turn into Borat… an incredible achievement by Miss Farris.
So if you find yourself wavering in whether you made the right decision in leaving your ex and you’re considering going back to him, watch this film! It will set you right and show you that your ex is your ex for a reason. Go for something new, especially when that new is Chris Evans.
Another rom-com with Queen Latifah, but this one speaks to your soul. Queen Latifah is teaching you to embrace life at its fullest, to stop putting everything off and to put yourself out there.
So if you’ve been wallowing for a while over this break-up, definitely watch this film. It will pull you out of your state and make you want to get back out there, doing all the things you’ve been finding an excuse for.
You want to go travelling, go for it. You don’t need a boyfriend/girlfriend to go with you. Make friends while you’re there, or take a friend with you. I can’t think of many friends that wouldn’t want to go travelling with me.
You want to eat a 20 inch pizza with all the toppings, no ones stopping you. Eat all the foods you want to.
Do everything you want to.
The Last Holiday is inspiring and brilliant, Queen Latifah does and says everything she wants to. She no longer holds back. She is 100% herself. And that’s what you need to start doing.
Be unapologetically you.
Also, if you are a foodie this rom-com is a dream. Although make sure you have food with you while you watch because the food they cook throughout is going to make your mouth water. There is one scene where Queen Latifah orders the entire menu to try every dish… if that isn’t a dream of yours you need to sort your priorities. You’ll be jealous of the plates put in front of her.
The fairy tale to make you all believe in love again. And who doesn’t need a Disney movie after a breakup? I’m pretty sure I had a marathon of all the Disney Princess films after my last breakup, can’t say I didn’t enjoy it.
Enchanted is a different level of Disney princess though, Giselle comes into the real world rather than the animated and learns of what it means to have dreams of your own further than finding a man.
Giselle goes from thinking she needs a man to rescue her, to having her own fashion business.
This is rom-com that gives you more than just one princess, it incorporates all the different Disney princesses into one film. You have Snow White’s apple, Cinderella’s shoe, Sleeping Beauty’s sleeping state and dragon and Ariel’s shell bra but more modest.
A rom-com that focuses more on the romance than the others, but this could be what you need after a breakup. You need to be shown that there is love out there, and you just need to find someone that is right for you.
Of course there’s no rush, and remember the disney rule: you can’t marry a man you have just met.
