5 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Date Your Best Friend’s Ex

More often than not, finding the “one” for you is nearly impossible. You’re bound to bump into your fair share of jerks, perverts, and just downright awful people when you’re dating. So, when you finally find the perfect one for you, I understand why it might be hard to shy away from the temptation of saying “yes!” right off the bat. But what if they’re your best friend’s ex? I know you can’t choose who you fall in love with, and it’s not your fault if they just so happen to be your best friend’s ex. But here are 5 reasons why you SHOULDN’T date your best friend’s ex.

1. It’s going to be awkward.

Let’s be real, things are bound to get awkward between you and your best friend. Imagine their ex coming to pick you up or to meet when you’re hanging out with your best friend- there’s going to be so much tension, you’d wish you weren’t there. It’s going to start getting weird when you talk about your relationship, and soon you won’t even be able to tell your best friend ANYTHING about it.

Not to mention the idea of dating someone your best friend has kissed and/or had sex with – now, THAT’s awkward and something you probably wouldn’t want to constantly think about.

2. Dealing with jealousy.

Although you probably wouldn’t want to admit it, you’re bound to get jealous if you choose to date your best friend’s ex. Even in a normal relationship, sometimes you can’t help but compare yourself to your SO’s exes. But what if that ex is your best friend? You know your best friend in and out, so the comparisons will go from outward appearances to every single aspect of your personalities. And it doesn’t help that you have to see your best friend almost all the time! At least with anyone else, you can just ignore them and pretend they don’t exist.

3. Picking sides.

All breakups have two sides to them- and if you end up dating your best friend’s ex, you’re going to be forced to pick one. Do you side with your SO, and risk losing your best friend in the process? Or do you side with your best friend, and risk breaking up with the one you love? The best choice is to always just NOT date your best friend’s ex. That way, you can just side with your best friend without having to stress out about something so immature and trivial.

4. You might end up losing both of them.

You might think you’re capable of supporting both sides without causing any drama, but you run the risk of just ruining it all. Your best friend might feel betrayed by this, and your friendship might just fall apart then and there. Plus, relationships aren’t always predictable and stable, so there’s always that chance of breaking up. Losing a best friend or a SO is one thing, but losing them both just because you’ve decided to date your best friend’s ex is another.

5. It’s a dick move.

All in all, choosing to go for someone even after you know what they’ve put your best friend through is a dick ass move. Think about how your best friend is going feel about this whole situation before you do anything- I mean, it is their ex after all. Don’t be selfish, there’s always more fish in the sea.

Are you thinking of dating your best friend’s ex? Or is your best friend going after YOUR ex and you don’t know what to do? Leave your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below.
