5 Reasons Why You Should Become An Early Bird

Most of you will be familiar with the phrase ‘the early bird catches the worm’ and there’s a reason it exists. While we all love a lie in now and again, it’s certainly not a good habit to get into, especially as it’s one that’s so difficult to stop. There’s so much to do in life that it would be a shame to waste our days sleeping (no matter how comfy our beds might be), so here are some reasons why, from now on, you should set your alarm clock to 8am at the latest!

1. You’ll be more productive

Whether you find you work better in the mornings or at night, it’s still a good idea to wake up early and crack on with your day. I used to find that if I got up later than 11 I’d have no motivation to do anything productive. I’d ask myself, ‘if most of the day’s already gone, what’s the point in starting now?’ before postponing that day’s tasks to the next. It’s only now that I see how wrong my attitude was, and how that led to a nasty cycle of not getting things done and consequently feeling bad. We feel a lot better in ourselves if we get up and make the most of our days rather than sleeping our way through them.

2. No distractions

Your productivity levels will increase as a result of fewer distractions – it’s amazing how quiet it is in the morning, when everyone else is asleep. Not only will waking up early help you mentally prepare for the day and be on top form for whatever’s to come, but there’s also no one around to disturb you. If you have something important to tick off your to-do list, get up and do it! There will be fewer people shouting round the house, blasting music, or even beeping horns outside. The world really is your oyster in the morning, my friend.

3. You won’t skip breakfast

Breakfast is regularly called the most important meal of the day, so why is it that many of us still skip it? If we wake up too late, we end up rushing around trying to get ready for the day’s events, which in turn often leads to us grabbing something unhealthy on our way out. In reality, we should give ourselves enough time to prepare and eat a healthy breakfast, and actually enjoy it! It’s no fun jamming a dry slice of toast in your mouth on the bus.

4. You’ll have more time to exercise

It’s the best feeling in the world when we wake up feeling genuinely refreshed and ready for the day. If we don’t, there’s no way we’ll feel like doing exercise, because we just won’t believe we have the energy for it. Getting into the regular routine of waking up early will not only help you start your day with a positive mindset, but also, believe it or not, keep your energy levels up for the rest of the day. So stop making excuses that you’re too tired after work, and get up and go for a morning run instead! Trust me, your body will thank you for it.

5.  You’ll feel better for it

Perhaps both the most simple and most important reason why you should become an early bird – you’ll feel great when you do! It might take a little while to get used to, but once your sleeping pattern is regular and you’re getting at least eight hours each night, I guarantee you’ll feel like a completely different person. Many of us fear that we won’t feel like we’ve truly lived our lives before we die, but the only way we can prevent that is by getting out and actually doing things. It’s extremely unlikely that you’re going to remember ‘that time you slept in’!

Try being an early bird, even just for a few days, and watch the effect that it has both on your physical and mental health! Are you an early bird? How do you drag yourself out of bed? Let us know in the comments below!
