Like many teens in the early 2010’s, I went through a phase of teasing my then-flat hair daily, fixing the entire thing in place with hairspray and probably ruining the quality of my hair for the next few years. Obviously all this does is leave you with tangled chunks of immobile hair – definitely not a look anyone needs to see (or untangle at the end of the day.) You don’t really see people doing this anymore, though, thanks to the fact that the entire cosmetics industry has advanced well beyond the days of crispy, sticky, knotted hair, and Maybelline Matte Mousse foundation. Something I wish I’d known about during this time of my life is root-lifting spray. Root lifting spray offers daylong hold with minimal product, targeting the roots (as the name suggests) instead of your entire hair.
You apply it to the roots only – meaning you don’t have to faff about with multiple products or brushes! Apply to wet or damp hair and blow-dry for best results. Most sprays come with a small nozzle that allows you to get as close to the scalp as possible.
Finer hair is easily weighed down by product. With root lifting spray, as you apply the product to the roots of your hair you’ll be using less product overall, making for a much more natural an effect. With very fine hair, products like mousse can easily lead to your hair being weighed down – root spray, however, is only applied to the roots (I mean, it is in the name). It offers a lift without dragging down fine hair!
It makes your up dos look fuller if you have thin hair by creating volume and adding colour. As it lifts from the roots, it creates natural-looking fullness to hair – saving your messy up dos! Try root-lifting spray with texturizing spray (sea salt spray, for example) for a ‘rolled out of bed’ messy bun or pony.
There’s nothing worse than the crispy, sticky mess of a cocktail of hairsprays and mousses and what have yous: the fact that this is only applied to the roots means that your hair will maintain a natural bounce!
