5 Reasons I’m Excited To Start At University College London

When it came to picking a university for my Masters course, I knew instantly that University College London was the dream. Having the chance to return to my hometown and experience it in a new way was so exciting. For anyone new to the city, here are some reasons to get hyped about starting University College London.

1. Location, Location, Location.

Situated in gorgeous Bloomsbury, University College London is located in a quieter corner within the busy city of London.  Campus buildings are nestled in between leafy gardens, bars, restaurants and Soho shopping. It’s all a short walk away. My tips for making the most of UCL’s amazing location: Grab a coffee in between lectures, head to Gordon Square gardens, and watch the September leaves change. Visit the incredible Egyptian Mummies at the British Museum. Invite your friends for a sourdough pizza at Franco Manca.

2. Ranked #7 In The World.

Google ‘Best universities in the world’, and you’ll see University College London in spot number 7 (QS Ranking 2016). It’s no wonder, with research excellence, 29 Nobel Laureates since the prize was invented, and all the academic resources of a capital city.

Plus, it has a fantastic reputation for post-graduation employment – QS ranks it as #17 internationally. I know that being a University College London grad will mean I’m in safe hands when it comes to planning my dream career.

3. “London’s Global University.”

One of the most unique things about University College London is its global student body. A whopping 41% of UCL students come from 145 countries worldwide. I’m excited to make friends with as many international students as possible. I will gain new insight into different cultures and can visit as many of the 145 countries as I can!

4. The Social Calendar.

UCL has some really exciting social events held throughout the year, no matter what you study. The varsity between University College London and Kings College London I’ve heard is one of the highlights of the social calendar, and the after party can’t be missed. UCL has won the Rugby Cup against Kings College for seven years in a row. I’m hoping in 2017 I’ll get to experience another win!

5. Being an Independent Woman.

I’ve heard from lots of people that University College London works best for those who like to do their own thing. It’s in the middle of a busy city, with 30,000 students and a large spread out campus, it’s not exactly a ‘traditional’ uni experience. Moving to London is not for the faint hearted. After conquering the tube at rush hour, you’ll feel like the strong, independent city girl you knew you could be.

Hi, I'm Lauren, I'm currently living in London doing a Masters in International Relations at UCL, and did my undergrad at the University of Birmingham. I love city life, food and murder mysteries (Serial and S-Town are my fave) but my main love is travel - the aim is to visit all 50 states by the time I'm 50... currently on 11 so 39 to go!
