5 Reasons Getting A Summer Job Is A Good Idea

Depending on when you return to school, college, or university, you may still have time to get yourself a summer job, and if not, then it’s never too soon to plan for next summer! There are so many reasons that make getting a job throughout the summer a really great idea, both for your bank account and your CV. So, here are five of the best reasons to get a summer job!

1. Boost your confidence

Putting yourself out into the world of work for the first time can be a seriously scary thing, but it is guaranteed to boost your confidence. You will probably be massively thrown out of your comfort zone when you get yourself a summer job, but it will do wonders for your confidence. You’ll get used to thinking on your feet, being more independent, and just generally dealing with people in the real world. It can be daunting being surrounded by so many people older than you and also having to deal with strangers, but once you realise that the world and all of the adults in it aren’t actually so petrifying, you’ll become much more self-assured and used to dealing with these things.

2. Get a grip on the world of work ASAP

The world of work is very different to school, and no matter how confident you feel at school, adjusting to life at work can be a challenge. The sooner you put yourself out there and experience the world of work, the easier it will be as if you put it off it will likely become scarier over time. Get in there when you’re young and go for it to do your future self a favour.

3. Boost your CV

Your straight As at school will look great on your CV when you’re trying to break into the world of work, but having some bar work or waitressing or work in a supermarket on your CV will definitely help you out in future. Not only does a summer job suggest that you have ambition and a good attitude to working, but it will show any potential future employer that you have experience in working with people, using your initiative and will have probably experienced having to take on some responsibility in one way or another – all of which are great things that will definitely help to get you employed.

4. The money

The money you earn from a summer job can be used in all sorts of ways. You can either use the job as an opportunity to help your parents out and pay them back for some of the many things that they’ve bought you throughout the year, or you can use it to have fun with your friends during summer, or save it up to buy yourself something nice! If you’re struggling to find the motivation to get up and go to work in the summer, you can also use the money as a big reminder to yourself to stay motivated.

5. It will help to give you an idea of what you do or don’t want to do

If you’re young and have absolutely no idea what you want to do with the rest of your life, it is often because you’re inexperienced. Experiences help us to decide both what we do and don’t like, and it’s the same for jobs. For example, if you get a job in a shop and hate it, that might help you to decide that you don’t want to ever have a career in retail. On the other hand, if you get a summer job as a waitress in a restaurant and spend some time working with a chef and see that you like their job, you might decide that you’d really like to become a chef. Either way, a summer job can help you to figure out your future.

So, whatever your motivation, there are plenty of reasons to get a summer job. If it’s too late for you to get one this summer, why not spend the coming school/college/university year putting together a CV and when spring comes around you can start handing it out nice and early and get yourself a job for next summer! Let us know in the comments below why you think getting a summer job is great or why you want one.
