University of Glasgow is a pretty big campus! At the heart of the west end, UofG stands high and proud all over the area- mainly on a hilly, long road (much to the dismay of all its students and workers!) With this being said, because the university is spaced out, with buildings all over campus and on the outskirts of campus too, there are lots of people you will always run into at University of Glasgow and these people are…
Students handing out flyers are probably one of the most likely kinds of people you will always run into at the University of Glasgow! They usually can be found dispersed out on the hill towards the library- as its always busy around this area, making it the perfect spot to get the attention of a number of students during any time of the day. Whether you hate them or can just about tolerate them waving flyers out towards your face when you just want to go study in the library in peace, these are definitely people you will not stop meeting at University of Glasgow!
Glasgow, being one of the most major cities in Scotland and such a big city at best is always a much loved tourist destination. With this being said, as the University of Glasgow is one of the top 100 universities in the world, Scotland’s university of the year and the fourth English- speaking university in the world, it goes without saying that it has all the accolades that people want to witness for themselves. Plus, let’s not forget that the sheer beauty of the ‘Hogwarts’ styled building is a hot spot for all the harry potter fans out there! It comes as no surprise that you will run into many tourists asking for directions, taking pictures of the uni and quite frankly making you jealous of the fact that you are not on holiday yourselves!
During the start of the year, it is quite ordinary to see an array of freshers walking up and down campus with ABSOLUTE confusion and fear! Trust me- I was one of them! If you are in any other year you will know the signs of when you are in the presence of a fresher- the constant looking down on their phones for directions, talking to themselves in agitation saying something along the lines of “where is this f****** building!” or desperately asking others around them for help and guidance. Sadly, this is just a highly annoying experience EVERY first year will have at the UofG- which does appear like a labyrinth at first, making lost first year students one of the top people you will always run into at Glasgow uni!
Now this next type is more of a jolly one! You are bound to meet your friends around campus considering it is so big and has a lot of students! Whether on your way to class, in the library or in the student union, you will always end up seeing a friend or two! This definitely makes for a great interaction when you are all stressed and tuckered out from your assignments and exams, making it the perfect time to both talk about and escape the stress whilst equally venting out all your frustrations at the same time!
Along with seeing your friends, you will of course see your ex flatmates- you know the ones you had assigned during first year at university halls. This is a great time to catch up if you got along with these people and haven’t seen them since your days as a fresher, however it’s a bit awkward if you didn’t get on with them at all! I was lucky enough to like all my flatmates, so seeing them made me smile and want to catch up with them! But I certainly did hear all the stories from friends who hated their so called ‘loud, inconsiderate and messy’ flatmates, so I am sure seeing such people would only bring back the bad memories and consequently make you want to put your head down so they don’t see you! Either way we all have ex flatmates, so seeing them around uni should come as no real shock to you!
Seeing your peers around uni is pretty much a standard occurrence. I mean it should come as no surprise to see them wherever you go considering they will be attending the same lectures and seminars as you. With this being said, your peers are people you will always see around uni without a shadow of a doubt!
If you see your peers wherever you go that means you will see your tutors/ lecturers as well as you all attend class together. There are a number of lectures and seminars a week so you will definitely always mange to see your teachers at uni all the time. You will also see them around University Avenue where most of them reside when they don’t have to teach, making it the perfect place to go if you have a question or two!
I don’t know why but UofG seems to always have some sort of maintenance work that needs to be down around campus. I mean, judging that it is a huge and really ancient uni actually does make it likely that it needs to be maintained in some way or form. This makes it evident that you will see a number of construction workers on campus grounds. Trying to dodge them as you are running off to class is something which you need to learn how to do if you want to be on time for sure, making them one of the many kinds of people you will see around Glasgow uni!
It a given that you will meet the same workers of the university when you go into the services the university provides for you such as the library, cafes, unions and bookshops. Going to university is a daily thing so it’s a really good thing that UofG workers are all so friendly and accommodating for sure! 😉
Students from societies often do fundraisers for their clubs around campus- mainly outside the library and in front of the QMU (Queen Margaret Union). This is a typical activity all societies do to raise more money and awareness for their clubs, events and causes- making these students one of the most common sorts of people you will see around Glasgow uni. The best kinds are the ones which sell baked goods in order to slyly lure you in… so seeing these societies in particular paves the way to you having a much needed sweet treat for when you are studying hard at uni! 😉
