Every University is unique, and every student has a different experience, with their own studies, inside jokes, and people. But some experiences are unanimous at university. Here are 10 people you’ll always run into at the University of Exeter, Penryn Campus.
1.The Falmouth Student
A running joke at Penryn Campus is the presentation of Falmouth Students. Stereotypically they dress and look a certain way, favouring a more hippie-like style that goes hand in hand with their more artistic studies. They are hard to miss on Campus, and within mere weeks of studying here you either become one or become experts at recognising one.
2.The Vegan
Going hand in hand with the more free-style of Falmouth students is the ever-increasing presence of vegans. Though there is absolutely nothing wrong with vegans, and more often than not they are admirable, kind, and mind their own business, you are highly likely to cross paths with a shaming vegan on Penryn Campus, armed with an argumentative attitude. You’ll known within seconds when you’ve encountered one, and you must make your escape as quickly as possible before you’re dragged into an intense personal shaming.
3.The Sportsperson/The Gym-goer
Sports societies are big on campus, with a wide variety from rugby to sea swimming. It’s easy to tell a sportsperson on Penryn Campus, as they’ll likely be wearing their sports hoodies and other clothing related to the society outside of actually playing sports. It’s also tough to head to the campus gym without coming face to face with hardcore gym-goers who will (consciously or unconsciously) make you feel slightly bad if you aren’t quite as ‘good’ at the gym.
4.The CSM Student
CSM students (from the Camborne School of Mines) are infamous on campus, whether through sports, mining, parties, or events. They often travel in packs and can sometimes be slightly loud and overwhelming if you aren’t used to them. They are fun though, and the annual sports matches (Bottle) bring students together to celebrate the University. CSM students are proud and loud, and you’re sure to have an unforgettable encounter with them not long into studying at Penryn Campus.
5.The Partier
Every University has the party crowd, and Penryn Campus is no different. There are always the students who go to University purely for the lifestyle, rather than for studies, and you’re sure to encounter them at least once. Just pray you don’t share a flat with them in first year if you don’t like that lifestyle.
6.The Posh Kid
Being a good University, the University of Exeter attracts students from all kinds of backgrounds. The ones that stand out the most though are students from more upper class private backgrounds, as they sometimes struggle to relate to other students from different backgrounds. Often the butt of a lot of jokes, they tend to draw attention to themselves with their different life experiences and world-views.
7.The ‘Never Been Away From Home Before’ Student
You will always encounter students who have never had to fend for themselves before, and they usually stand out as they barely manage to cook for themselves, and tend to run out of clothes before they realise they have to do their own laundry. You’re almost guaranteed to have one in your flat in first year, and they will provide much entertainment, and just a little dose of worry as you fear for their futures.
8.The Hardworker
You’ll always find these students in the library, and they’ll usually always be ahead of deadlines, have done extra work, and get good marks. These students represent an almost unachievable level of productivity, and you’ll find yourself envious of their motivation.
9.The Lads
Contrary to popular belief, these can be male or female, and then to be students who come to university to party and just generally have fun, especially if this involves hooking up. They’re loud, proud, often travel in groups, and you’ll often find them in Club I, Mangos, or Toast, trying to hook up with someone. But don’t worry, for the most part they’re fun and harmless.
10.The Experimenter
These are the students who want to make the most of the University experience, and so they experiment with everything they haven’t had the opportunity to before, and likely won’t again. They might dabble in alcohol, drugs, sex, and many other things, in a combined form of self-exploration and a previously unexperienced and uncontrolled freedom.
