With the end of the summer in sight, there are some very appealing autumn fashion trends to try out as we roll into the next season. While some catwalk outfits are far too outlandish and impractical for most women, this year’s Autumn/ Winter fashion shows have also brought some great wearable looks, perfect for the cooler seasons. This year’s focus is the power of femininity, with more modest styles being mixed with bright colours and broad shoulders for impact. With new trends, as well as a number of revivals, there should be something on this list of our favourite autumn looks, to suit everyone’s style:
Forget any concerns about leopard print being trashy, because this year it has featured all over the A/W catwalks and is one of our favourite autumn looks for 2018! Designers like Michael Kors, Tom Ford and Victoria Beckham showcased an array of leopard print coats, alongside several other wild animal prints. However, it is timeless leopard print which is to set to return to high streets this autumn, most likely on shoes, bags and luxurious coats, so grab yourself something in this bold print and you’ll be bang on trend next season!

No we haven’t travelled back in time a few decades, but the classic mini party dress is making a big comeback this year! For 2018, it’s all about making a statement and getting your legs out for the party season. Designers such as Chanel, Alexander McQueen and Ashish all featured striking, thigh-grazing dresses in their A/W collections and with fabrics ranging from velvet to lace to silk and even full on sequins, there is something to suit everyone! This has got to be one of our favourite autumn looks!

Tweed is a heritage fabric with an air of luxury and formal sharpness to it, making any outfit look expensive and classy. Marc Jacobs featured tweed coats and trousers with contrasting relaxed pieces, while Louis Vuitton dressed models in tweed skirts for the A/W catwalks. There are lots of ways to wear this trend, such as a tweed jacket over a dress or a crisp white shirt tucked into tweed trousers, for a smart, but wearable outfit suitable for work. If you like effortless chic, give this autumn look a try when the weather turns cooler!

Tartan was a popular choice in 2016 and it is making a return for the 2018 A/W season! Checks and plaid designs in all their colours and forms, have been huge on the catwalks this year and this relaxed print is always popular on the high street. This trend is easy to wear and there are numerous ways you can incorporate checks into your outfits as the season changes, so don’t be afraid to go bold in plaid to be bang on trend this autumn!

Traditionally used for coat linings, handbags and equestrian wear, quilting took centre stage on the A/W catwalks for 2018. While quilting was popular amongst designers, with quilting detail appearing on a variety of clothing styles to give a contrasting texture, the easiest and most popular way to wear this trend is as a jacket. Practical, stylish and warm as a blanket, you can’t go wrong with a quilted jacket this autumn!

One of the biggest A/W fashion trends for 2018 is the 3-5 layered style, including contrasting colours and textures to make a bold statement. Some designers layered piece over piece in a kind of throw-on style, but more wearable outfits were offered up by Christopher Lemaire who featured a grown-up shirtdress over trousers look and Coach whose turtleneck under dress under leather Matrix-style coat, was edgy, stylish and oozed class. This is one of the easiest autumn looks to achieve during the cooler weather and you can play around with as many layers and materials as you like for a unique look!

Cowboy inspired fashion was a quirky addition to the A/W catwalks and people are going to either love it or hate it. In Paris, Isabel Marant opened her runway show with models walking down the catwalk in prairie dresses and cowboy boots to Dolly Parton’s Jolene. Designers like Coach, Fendi, Calvin Klein and Louis Vuitton, also featured cowboy styles from fringing to cap toed boots, to bohemian neckerchiefs and western style belts. This is definitely one of our favourite autumn looks and offers an easy transition from the summer season!

This is one of the most prominent trends of the A/W 2018 catwalks, with designers including Saint Laurent, Marc Jacobs, Miu Miu and Christopher Kane, all offering up 80’s inspired designs. With familiar bold shoulders, colour-blocking, oversized ruffles, power suits, neon colours, acid washed jeans, iridescent fabric and big earrings, this updated, glam 1980s fashion revival has got to be one of our top autumn looks for 2018!

Leather was probably the most dominant fabric across all the 2018 A/W catwalk shows. Saint Laurent brought drama with ankle length leather dresses, Alexander Wang and Hermes went for smarter leather shirts and Miu Miu featured short leather dresses that oozed sex appeal. High shine, patent leather is particularly on trend and although black leather dominated, there were also many other colours showcased this year. Versatile and edgy, leather is being used for dresses, skirts, coats and even trousers, so there should be a way for everyone to enjoy this autumn trend!

10. Throws/ Shawls
A popular trend at A/W catwalks, throws became a winter essential a few seasons ago and are once again making a comeback. This year, throws have become bigger than ever before, with some appearing more like blankets! Throws can be worn in different ways, such as Lemaire’s throw which was worn like a cape over the model’s shoulder and then Isabel Marant’s throw which was styled more like a poncho, with a brooch fastening it all together. More formal throws can be worn over long party dresses to add sophistication and more drama than a coat, while casual throws can be used as a stylish, snuggly accessory during the cold seasons. This cosy, adaptable trend has to be one of our favourite autumn looks for 2018!
