Our Favorite Androgynous Style Icons Through The Ages

An androgynous style and way of dressing is becoming increasingly popular in current years, but it is something that has always existed. Androgynous style icons have always been there, it may not have been as socially acceptable to have an androgynous style in previous years as it is now, but it has always existed. Androgynous style is so important for each individual to express who they are in the way that that dress, and not having to conform to gender stereotypes. To give these androgynous style icons the recognition they deserve and celebrate how thy have paved the way to allow others to be themselves, here are our favourite androgynous style icons through the ages.

1. David Bowie

David Bowie was a hugely influential to so many people. Not only for his music, but also in blurring the lines of gender conformity in fashion. This androgynous style icon was a symbol for so may that it is okay to wear exactly what you want, no matter how colourful and crazy!

2. Prince

Prince is well known for being gender-non-conforming. He even sings “I am not a woman. I am not a man. I am something you’ll never understand”. As an androgynous style icon, Prince helped to bring androgyny into the spotlight.

3. Grace Jones

Grace Jones has faced prejudice and discrimination for not only her race but her gender too. She puts such a fierce spin on both femininity and masculinity and hasn’t let anyone stand in her way! She stated in her memoirs “I considered myself an energy that had not been classified”.

4. Kurt Cobain

Kurt Cobain has always been the face of grunge. But despite him having a more hard, masculine edge, he wasn’t afraid to show off and express his more feminine side! Kurt Cobain was proud to be a feminist before it was cool. As an androgynous style icon, he was never afraid to dress exactly how he wanted and was the first one to challenge anyone who would question his choice. Cobain was quoted saying “there’s nothing more comfortable than a cosy flower pattern”, and we can’t argue with that one can we!?

5. Katharine Hepburn

It wasn’t always acceptable for women to wear trousers. Katharine Hepburn has been described as “the patron saint of the independent American female”. This androgynous style icon has faced so many adversities because of her gender throughout her career. She even turned up on stage in her knickers when her movie executives confiscated her trousers in an attempt to stop her wearing them! She has been quoted saying “anytime I hear a man say he prefers a woman in a skirt, I say, try one!”. This androgynous style icon wasn’t taking shit from anyone!

6. Cara Delevingne

Cara Delevingne wears exactly what suits her on a given day, if she wants to wear it, she wears it. This model turned heads at Princess Eugenie’s wedding when she attended the ceremony in a top hat and tails. And let’s not pretend she didn’t look great! This androgynous style icon pulled the look off so well. Cara has never been one to not be herself, her big eyebrows practically started the eyebrow trend.

7. Jaden Smith

Jaden Smith is one of the youngest androgynous style icons, combining his modern, streetwear style with more feminine clothing pieces and accessories. He has even been featured in Louis Vuitton’s women’s campaign!
