6 Nostalgic Things Only 90’s Kids Will Remember

If you’re a ’90s kid, you probably remember a lot of things growing up that probably doesn’t exist anymore or is slowly becoming non-existent. In the decade where the World Wide Web or text messages were invented, it seemed like a weird and crazy time to grow up. Here are six nostalgic things that only ’90s kids will remember:

1. Tamagotchis

The Tamagotchi is a handheld digital pet created in Japan and brings back a lot of nostalgia. Released in 1996 in Japan and then released worldwide a year later, the Tamagotchi became one of the biggest and popular toys for kids in the ’90s.

This was a toy that every ’90s kid wanted for their birthday or for Christmas. As soon as you activate the toy, an egg appears and hatches into a small pet. You were required to take care of your pet and making sure it’s looked after and well-fed and when it died, it was devastating.

2. Game Boys

The very first Game Boy came out in 1989 but it became hugely popular during the ’90s.

This games console is probably what every ’90s kid became addicted to. You were able to play Super Mario or Tetris and you’d continue to attempt every stage over and over again until you got to the next level. If the game was fuzzy on the screen or the game stopped working for whatever reason, you know you had to take out the game card and blow in it in case there was dust inside.

The most traumatising thing though was getting to the end of a really difficult stage and then the batteries died (can anybody relate?).

3. The Nokia phone

The ’90s saw the evolution of the original analogue Nokia phone. The candy bar phones were everywhere and of course, the Nokia ringtone was instantly memorable.

There have been so many variations of the Nokia phone but it wasn’t until 2000 that we saw the Nokia 3310’s popularity with its simple and sleek design skyrocket. Mobile phones where you had to press the button three times to get the right letter seemed like a long time ago and completely different to the smartphones we know now.  Of course, how can you also forget the classic Snake game?

4. Blockbuster

Before Blu-ray DVDs, there was a time in the ’90s where the video store Blockbuster existed. This is definitely one of the nostalgic things that I think a lot of people forget.

The VHS tapes were a pain whenever they never played properly – you would have to wind up the tape with a pen/pencil if the tape was falling out. The trademark aspect of VHS tapes was the colour bars that you’d see when the tape finished. Labelling the VHS and finding the correct videotape was of course what every kid loved to do.

5. Pokémon cards

Pokémon cards were part of a trading game where you had to collect as many cards as possible. Released in 1996, it was based on Nintendo’s Pokémon franchise of video games and anime.

The game required you to take the role of a Pokémon trainer and use the Pokémon to battle your opponent’s Pokémon. Getting as many Pokémon cards to add to your collection was also addictive too!

6. L’Oreal kids shampoo

This shampoo was aimed at kids and it was what every kid was using. They even had a special shampoo to use after you went swimming.

It says ‘no tears’ on the shampoo bottle but of course, this was a lie – if you got any of this shampoo in your eye, you probably felt you were going blind. What a lot of people don’t know, is that they meant no tears or tangles in your hair.

The decade before the new millennium proved to be a time in history where a lot happened. What do you think are the most nostalgic things? Comment below!
