As a massive musical theatre fan, the same goes for musical movies. They are feel-good, emotional and just sensational and the old ones often seem to be the best. If you’re ever in the mood to watch a film or listen to some music here are nostalgic musical movies that are bound to have you singing along.
One of the best movies of all times! Starring Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta as the iconic Danny and Sandy, Grease is the ultimate musical movie and is actually the most successful movie musical of all time! It’s official!
“Good girl Sandy and greaser Danny fell in love over the summer. When they unexpectedly discover they’re now in the same high school, will they be able to rekindle their romance or will it fail to cross clique lines?”
Directed, choreographed and starring Gene Kelly, Singin’ in the Rain is the most amazing film to make you happy. The song by the same name will have you belting it out and grinning like a Cheshire cat.
“When the transition is being made from silent films to `talkies’, everyone has trouble adapting. Don and Lina have been cast repeatedly as a romantic couple, but when their latest film is remade into a musical, only Don has the voice for the new singing part. After a lot of practice with a diction coach, Lina still sounds terrible, and Kathy, a bright young aspiring actress, is hired to record over her voice.”
West Side Story isn’t just going to have you singing along but sobbing too. But don’t let this put you off. It has some great musical numbers like “America” and “I Feel Pretty” for you to grab your hairbrush and mime along too.
“A musical in which a modern-day Romeo and Juliet are involved in New York street gangs. On the harsh streets of the upper west side, two gangs battle for control of the turf. The situation becomes complicated when a gang member falls in love with a rival’s sister.”
“It’s a hard knock life for us…”. I bet you’re singing already! Is there anything else left to even say?
“An orphan in a facility run by the mean Miss Hannigan, Annie believes that her parents left her there by mistake. When a rich man named Oliver “Daddy” Warbucks decides to let an orphan live at his home to promote his image, Annie is selected. While Annie gets accustomed to living in Warbucks’ mansion, she still longs to meet her parents. So Warbucks announces a search for them and a reward, which brings out many frauds and adventures.”
Not just on the list because of my love for the incredible Barbra Streisand but because it is a fab girl power movie. It is loosely based on the life and career of Broadway and film star and comedian Fanny Brice and her stormy relationship with entrepreneur and gambler Nicky Arnstein.
“The vibrant and beautiful young Fanny Brice starts out as a bit player on the New York City vaudeville stage, but works her way up to stardom on Broadway, while her relationship with her suave, imprisoned businessman husband, Nick Arnstein is another story..”
If you’re into musicals but also a bit of horror then Little Shop of Horrors is for you.
“Meek flower shop assistant Seymour pines for co-worker Audrey. During a total eclipse, he discovers an unusual plant he names Audrey II, which feeds only on human flesh and blood. The growing plant attracts a great deal of business for the previously struggling store. After Seymour feeds Audrey’s boyfriend, Orin, to the plant after Orin’s accidental death, he must come up with more bodies for the increasingly bloodthirsty plant.”
Above are only a few of some of the greats, there are many many more for you to sing along to. If you love musical movies then you’re sure to have a blast.
