15 Newcastle Landmarks You Need To Visit At Least Once
Funny enough, Newcastle is not all Greggs and trebles bars. In fact, the Toon is home to a wealth of cultural landmarks, not to mention a-hell-of-a-lot-of bridges. So jazz up your next study break by taking a trip to these must-see Newcastle Landmarks:
1. Angel in the North
Not your average Christmas card angel. Think of this fella as Gabriel’s edgy Geordie relative. If you want to snap a pic, move way, way (way, way, way, way) back – the Angel in the North is insanely huge.
2. Grey’s Monument
No faffing about with fancy names, this Geordie landmark is exactly what it says on the tin (that would be a monument to Earl Grey).
3. Flares
You can raise your eyebrows all you want, Flares definitely counts as a Newcastle landmark. With ABBA on repeat and disco lights everywhere, you can hardly argue that it doesn’t have any ‘historical’ significance.
4. Swing Bridge
Move aside London’s Tower Bridge, there’s a newer (and may I add, cooler) guy in town. Newcastle’s swanky device moves to let ships pass down the Tyne without bumping their heads. Pretty cool, eh?
5. Quayside
Speaking of bridges, Newcastle’s quayside has seven of them. First to cross all seven wins.
6. Grainger Market
Prepare for the stuff of dreams: cheap everything. Cheap pizza, cheap veggies, cheap cakes, cheap clothes, cheap books – I could go on. You’ll leave here with a heavy shopping bag and a happy bank balance (or not – we’re students after all).
7. The Castle
This not-so-new castle is where the city gets its name. Yes, I know it’s seen better days, but Oldcastle doesn’t have quite the same ring to it.

8. The Baltic
Woe betide a friend who accidentally took her parents here during a sex exhibition. Definitely worth a visit, but check what’s on before you bring along the rents.
9. Grey Street
Look who’s back. Earl Grey gets his fair share of landmarks in this city, but then can you expect anything less for the guy who lends his name to your afternoon cuppa?
10. The Cathedral
That pretty building across from Flares? That would be Newcastle’s Cathedral.

11. Jesmond Dene
In true British fashion, the sun will come out and students will flock in sunglasses and shorts to Jesmond Dene. Bliss.
12. Exhibition Park
Tucked away from busy Jesmond is Exhibition Park, complete with a pond, lights and, er, a brewery. That’s Sunday sorted.
13. Theatre Royal
No doubt you’ve wandered past the classical pillars as you’ve ventured to the Fat Hippo/Central Station/Flares (yes, I am obsessed). West End shows tend to stop off here, so keep your eyes peeled for tickets before they sell out.

14. China Town
That’s right – Newcastle has its own China Town. Prepare for enough egg-fried rice to feed you for weeks.
15. ‘Man with Potential Selves’
Those three statues of the same man by Central Station? They would be the ‘Man with Potential Selves.’ Countless times I’ve tried (and failed) to join the third in balancing horizontally on his elbow. All I’m saying is that guy has some serious core strength.
