London’s West End has a host of amazing musicals on at the moment and always. Going to the theatre is something magical and an extraordinary experience. If you’re looking for some inspiration on what to see then here are musicals any theatre lover has to see in London.
Hit Broadway musical Waitress has finally come to the West End and I couldn’t be more thankful. Featuring an original score by acclaimed singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles the musical is based on the motion picture of the same name written by Adrienne Shelley.
Waitress tells the story of Jenna Hunterson, a waitress who is in an unhappy marriage to her husband Earl. When she unexpectedly discovers she is pregnant, she starts an affair with her gynecologist and begins to look for ways out of her abusive relationship, embracing her unique pie-making skills as a chance for a new life.
Blake Harrison (star of the hilarious The Inbetweeners) has recently joined the cast of the show, taking over the role of Ogie and Strictly Come Dancing finalist and former Pussycat Doll Ashley Roberts has made West End debut as Dawn. An absolutely amazing cast!
Six is a British musical Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss. The idea came to Marlow while studying in his final year at Cambridge University, and the pair wrote the musical while studying for their final exams. It started off premiering at the Edinburgh Film Festival and went on to do a UK tour before finally landing a spot on the West End.
It tells the story of the six wives of Henry VIII like you’ve never heard before. Presented as a pop concert, as the wives take turns singing and telling their story to see who had the worst time with Henry and will become the group’s lead singer. A real lesson in history and girl power.
With all the excitement of the new film starring Beyonce and Donald Glover in production and coming out soon, now is the perfect time to go see the musical. After opening on Broadway in 1997, the show has gone on to be the most successful piece of entertainment in history.
It completely redefines what theatre can be and is a lifechanging experience. The acting, production, and movement of the animals are beautiful. It really brings to life the African Plains. Director and designer Julie Taymor crafts a colourful, imaginative and highly creative world that brings the flora, fauna, and animals of Africa to live, set against a timeless score by Elton John and Tim Rice.
9 to 5 brings the brilliant music of Dolly Parton to life on stage. With a story based on the 1980 film of the same name. Tells the story of Doralee, Violet, and Judy – three workmates pushed to boiling point by their sexist and egotistical boss. Concocting a plan to kidnap and turn the tables on their despicable supervisor, will the ladies manage to reform their office – or will events unravel when the CEO pays an unexpected visit?
You might recognise some famous faces from Lousie Redknapp, Brain Conley, and Love Island’s Amber Davies.
This brand new British musical is the inspirational story of Jamie New, a 16-year-old schoolboy from Sheffield who decides he wants to go to his school prom in a dress. The story takes inspiration from the BBC Three documentary Jamie: Drag Queen at 16, which followed the true story of Jamie Campbell.
Hilarious, moving and inspiring.
