5 Moving Tips That Will Make Your Life Much Easier

Moving into a new home is a daunting task: whether you’re moving countries or just into a new space, there’s a lot of stress and preparation that comes along with it. However overwhelming it can seem, it doesn’t have to take over your life entirely. With these moving tips you’ll have a more efficient, stress free move and feel settled into your new home before you know it.

1) Get packing early

This is one of the most important moving tips to follow, make sure you’re packed up and ready to go by the time you get the keys to your new place, you don’t want to waste valuable moving time by packing away those ‘last minute bits’ you’ve been promising yourself you’ll get to eventually. If you’re moving an entire house, start months before you move: you will be so surprised at the amount of random stuff you have accumulated over your time there and sorting through it will take longer than you think. If you’re moving country, don’t unpack fully until you’ve found your new home. It’s such a waste of time to settle into your hotel only to have to pack everything up again when you move into permanent accomodation.

2) Get utilities set up in advance

Day one of moving in, you’ve just carried 15 boxes and a fridge freezer up three flights of stairs only to realise you haven’t yet contacted the water supplier to notify them that you’re moving in and the supply has been cut off, therefore, you are unable to have a shower. Not ideal, right? As soon as you have a signed lease, get onto organising the utilities. Check which bills, if any, your landlord is liable to cover, check if your building supplies gas, look into what sort of WIFI speed you’ll be after. Utilities can sometimes take a week or longer to be connected, so make sure you give as much notice as possible. It’s also a good idea to shop around and compare suppliers to make sure you’re getting the best deal.

3) Set up your home as soon as possible

It’s such a pain moving everything you own to a new place. Once you’re in it’s easy to feel like the job is done and you deserve a good long rest. Whilst you can definitely sit down for a cup of tea and a biccie, your work has barely just begun. Erecting furniture and unpacking is the job that no ones want to do but if you don’t start straight away and get it done, you’ll never do it. You don’t want to be sat there two months after moving searching through boxes for a colander and sleeping on a mattress ’cause you haven’t found time to build that IKEA flat-pack bed. It’s hell, but just do it ASAP and get your house feeling like a home as quickly as possible.

4) Get some friends involved

Look, moving is hard. Not only mentally, but physically. If you’re moving in on your own, it can be a daunting and exhausting task to haul your furniture, clothes and other random bits of rubbish from your old home to our new one. Be realistic, you can’t carry a double bed and an L shaped sofa all on your own. One of the easiest moving tips is to get some friends or family involved, make it a fun, inclusive day and get your move done fast and effectively. Reward them by stocking up the fridge with beer and order in some pizza when you’re done, trust me, they’ll have earned it!

5) Know where your essentials are

Pack a sort of ‘overnight bag’ with all of your essential items. If you don’t finish moving until late at night you really don’t want to have to rummage through boxes trying to find your pyjamas and toothbrush. Make sure the essentials are accessible to you can still survive for a couple of days until everything is unpacked and in a new place.

While moving can be hard work, it’s always worth the stress when you’re enjoying your beautiful, new home. It’s important not to let yourself get overwhelmed and remember that with these 5 moving tips, you can make your move an absolute breeze.
