Much like many famous cities, Brighton has its fair share of tourist attractions that everyone wants to tick off their list of places they have visited. With that being said, some of the most famous places can tend to be a little overrated and not meeting your expectations. In this article, I am going to be telling you the eight most overrated places to go in Brighton and what your expectations of them should be.
Otherwise known as Brighton Pier for its famous association with the town, Palace Pier is usually the number one attraction which people want to visit. While the pier offers a lovely view of Brighton from the sea and is great for some photo opportunities, be prepared for overcrowding in the arcade, expensive food and long queues for the fair rides on sunny days.
As the gay capital of England, many people flock to Brighton for a good night out in a gay club, more specifically Revenge, the three-story club across from Brighton pier. While Revenge does have its better nights – such as themed events or scheduled drag queen performances – the days on which nothing special is planned leave the club just as standard as any other you would step into, not overly ‘gay’ and quite mainstream.
If you think heading down to Brighton’s seafront on a sunny day in Summer is a good idea, I can tell you now it is not. Everyone in Brighton and the surrounding area will be heading for the beach, leaving it extremely overcrowded. Furthermore, if you want to spend time sunbathing or building a sandcastle, you better think twice and Brighton’s beach is all pebbles. While it is nice to watch the sunset on the shore, it is not the best idea for a day out.
Honestly, who doesn’t love a good aquarium? They are great fun to visit and educational at the same time! Brighton Aquarium actually happens to be the oldest aquarium in England, but once you get past that fact, it doesn’t differ much from any other aquarium in any other city. If you are really desperate to go see the sea life then Brighton Aquarium is a good shout, however, there are so many more unique places that can be visited in Brighton.
The Brighton Lanes, which are not to be confused with indie and vintage shopping scene of the North Laines, are the historic back streets of Brighton’s old town. While the old architecture is very beautiful and makes for a great Instagram story, the shops are predominantly expensive jewellery shops so there is not much shopping to do. One plus side to the Lanes, however, is Choccywoccydoodah – a chocolate shop devoted to extravagant cakes and chocolate sculptures.
The British Airways i360 is Brighton’s alternative to the London Eye or the Shard, being a 162-metre high observation tower on the Brighton seafront. The i360 does offer a stunning view of the city and the sea, especially if you plan your visit so you are watching the sunset while in the observation tower. The downside to the i36o, however, is the expensive ticket, food and drinks; and also the fact that it is a very slow ride up and down.
As a shopaholic, I have to be fair in saying that Churchill Square Shopping Centre is a place which I frequent very often. However, if you are visiting Brighton for a weekend, there are so many other activities to do apart from shopping! On the other hand, if you came down to Brighton with the intention of blowing some cash on clothes, head to the North Laines to the unique and quirky shopping scene instead of spending it in stores you can find in any shopping centre all of the UK.
As any tourist to a British seaside town, it is almost the done thing to go to the first fish and chip shop that you spot on the seafront for your lunch or dinner. However, as the seafront is easily one of Brighton’s most visited tourist spots, the fish and chip shops (while good) are extremely overpriced for what they are selling. If you really are craving the need for this British classic, walk five minutes into town to get a cheaper and equally as good meal, and then head to the shore with your bargain meal.
