Worship is a funny thing. It’s something that is highly subjective, and that everyone interprets in their own way. And best believe, I’ve been worshipping at the temple of Lizzo since the release of ‘Cuz I Love You’. Is there anyone out there, vibing as much as her? Body positivity, self acceptance and lessons on love, Lizzo is the hero that pop culture has been desperately needing, perhaps forever.
Lizzo’s new album isn’t only sonically and vocally incredible, it is pure poetry and gospel. The first listen had me with my jaw dropped, ready to tattoo the entire album on myself. I’ve calmed down a bit about how fantastic it is, but only a little.
Literally same girl. Lizzo’s new album breaks out of the tired rut of ‘I love him’ and never ‘I love me’ that pop music has been perpetuating for far too long. The takeaway from this? There is only one of you, love yourself, cherish yourself, learn about yourself. And also, to not let the two faced people (who are sadly and inevitably going to try and get you down) get to you. Their dishonesty and fakeness is their truth, not yours.
PREACH IT GIRL. For me, this is the biggest life lesson from Lizzo’s new album. Life isn’t about waiting for someone, or waiting for something, to come along and make you happy, it’s about being happy and being comfortable with yourself, a truth that it has taken me a really long time to recognise. Sure, there’s value in boys, and there’s value in tinder dates and living your life your Carrie Bradshaw in the nineties, but the value of solitude, I would argue, is something even better.
TREAT YO’ SELF.
As the perpetually single friend, this line really has me screaming YAS QUEEN !
Wear make up? that’s chill. Don’t wear make up? that’s chill too.
A moment for the women who inspire us, a women for the idols we all have who have shown us that we can do, and be, whatever we want.
I love the way Lizzo uses ‘like a girl’, it slots in perfectly with the same reclaiming of derogatory terms we saw with ‘nasty gal’, in the 2016 election. The life lesson here? Don’t let people put you in little boxes, don’t let stereotypes tell you who you can or cannot be.
Say it louder for the people in the back.
Body positivity and Lizzo are becoming synonymous. Lizzo’s new album rallies against all the anti feminist body shaming bullshit that has poisoned the music industry, and subsequently, our ears, for my entire life. The life lesson here? Let’s talk about thick thighs, let’s talk about cellulite and just how amazing the female body is. Go Lizzo. Queen.
This is, in fact, the definition of relationship goals. Lizzo’s new album doesn’t leave me wanting to run into a relationship, but this line is a life lesson in that it’s sure as a way to measure how good a relationship is.
