Life in the Real World

6 Lies We Believe About Ourselves

There are so many lies we believe about ourselves. Here is a list of some of them.

Success is the opposite of failure.

This isn’t right at all. I believe there is no failure. We can only make mistakes and success is learning from those mistakes. We are conditioned to believe that the only route except that success is failure when it isn’t. In fact, sometimes not being successful on one path leads us down the one we are meant to be following. Not only that but everyone has their own definition of success. Success can be trying something out – simply trying it whether it goes the way you want it to go or not, you are still successful for aiming for it. This lie, the sentence itself is so narrow minded, do not say this to yourself because its message will only dampen your mood more. You can be sure this is one of the lies we believe about ourselves.

Our past defines us.

I have always said that I would never judge someone for their past. I wouldn’t let it define who they are or use that initial judgement as my final one. I believe people make mistakes and do things they aren’t proud of all the time. Rather than believing that is their true self you have to see if they are different now. If they don’t want to go back to that and if they do regret it slightly. You see we all live half our life not really knowing who we are, trying to find ourselves and going through a lot of trial and error. I wouldn’t let the mistakes I have made in the past define who I am now because I know I can only ever be better than I was. This is because I have learnt from the past, allowed it to show me things about myself. That is what defines me, how I learnt from my experiences and used them to grow me as a person.

I’m too old/too young.

Age is just a number after all, isn’t that what people say. Yes they may say it for another context but I believe it is right for a lot of things. A lot of people turn down opportunities because they think their age is a problem. They have the brains to do it, the correct way of thinking, the work ethic and the determination but they let their age create doubt in their minds. You’re never too old to try something you have never tried before and you certainly are never too young to make things happen for yourself. Sometimes we use age as an excuse ourselves because we let fear take control. When we do that, age is the best way out of it but we have to stop letting fear leave us with regrets. This is one of the biggest lies we believe about ourselves.

Any other love apart from unconditional love is selfish.

This is an interesting one, a lot of people lie to themselves that if they expect something from another person it is wrong. It is and it isn’t to a certain extent. We should always aim to do things without expecting anything in return. Just because we want to do something good for someone else. However, if we are trying so hard to love someone who doesn’t give the same effort or same love back in return then it isn’t selfish to want them to. It is ok to want to be treated how you treat others. It is normal to wish the same for yourself in these situations so take this lie out of your mind. It isn’t selfish, yes unconditional love is what we should always aim to give but it is natural and right to want it for yourself too. This is definitely one of the lies we believe about ourselves.

I don’t have time.

Time, my favourite excuse. I am too busy to do that, I don’t have time to try that, I want to but I can’t find the time. Here is my issue with this, yes we have busy lives but how long do we want to keep letting time dictate whether we try something new or experience something that could be life changing. We complain about never having the time but never do anything to try and change that. Albert Einstein once said “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting a different result.” Things won’t change for you if you don’t step out to make that first change.

If you don’t have the time then why don’t you figure out how to make the time rather than complaining. Complaining is a waste of time essentially and by just eliminating that out of your life I bet you’ll find some minutes here and there. This also includes sacrifice, we spend hours doing something pointless and wishing we were doing something else. Being on our phones for example, we spend so long on them that I believe if we cut down the time on social media we would free up a lot of time to do something we want to do. Also wake up an hour earlier, become a morning person and see how much more you can fit into your lifestyle. This lie can easily be overcome.

I can’t do it.

Believe in yourself because you can. You are a magnificent human being, there is no one like you on this planet but if someone else can do it then so can you. Don’t limit yourself, don’t underestimate what you are capable of. You can do so much and if you have a desire to do it and if you have the determination to do it then you are the only obstacle in your own way. Excuses only sound good to those that make them, and this excuse is the weakest of them all. Don’t let this lie control you and your mind. Overpower it and go after what you want.
