8 Independent Cafes In Chester You Need To Visit

Chester is a beautiful Roman city, with the most complete Roman city walls, and the largest Roman Amphitheatre in Britain. The ancient charm is present all over the city; from the city walls to the riverfront, to the centre, with lots of shops embedded into the 700-year-old buildings. This is the perfect place for independent shops and cafes to thrive. Here is a list of 8 of the best independent cafes in Chester you need to visit.

The Flower Cup

61, Watergate Row South

The Flower Cup is a unique, indie, botanical coffee shop that is located right in the centre of Chester. The cafe is also a florist which sells plants and flowers, so it is the perfect relaxing environment for a late morning coffee and breakfast!

Jaunty Goat Coffee

57 Bridge Street

The Jaunty Goat is one of the top quality cafes in Chester, with their own house blend of coffee beans and a wide range of cakes, pastries and sandwiches on offer all day. Located on street level underneath Chester’s famous and unique The Rows, the natural light only comes in at the front and makes for a cosy environment to relax or work in.

The Barista’s Coffee Company

9 Watergate Street & at the new Bus Interchange

The Barista’s is an independently owned and run coffee shop that now has two locations in Chester: one being in a 400-year-old building on Watergate Street, and the other a part of the new development at the Bus Interchange.

The cafe works with local suppliers and bakeries to offer delicious and fresh food and drink every day.

Little Yellow Pig

31 Westminister Road, Hoole

Located not too far away from Chester train station, this blue building really stands out – and for good reason. This little cafe won the bronze award for Best Cafe in the Taste Cheshire Awards 2017.

Cinderbox Coffee

Cinderbox Coffee was cited by the Sunday Times when Chester was listed as one of their best places to live in the UK list. Marmalade

67 Northgate Street

Located near Chester Cathedral, this independent cafe is licensed and serves a range of breakfast and lunch dishes. All of the meat, cheese and vegetables in the dishes are sourced from local Chester suppliers, and the cafe will be happy to tell you which suppliers if you’re interested.

Hanky Panky Pancakes

20 Commonhall Street

Hanky Panky is one of the more fun independent cafes in Chester, with the menu based around delicious pancakes with bright and sunny decor. It is a family-based business, and the owner still uses the Scotch pancake recipe that was passed down to him from his father. It’s tucked away just out of the busy centre, so it’s a relaxing space to stop for a coffee and a pancake.

Artichoke Cafe Bar Bistro

The Steam Mill, Canal Quarter

This cafe is also a bar and bistro. That means it offers a range of food and drinks which are sourced locally. The decor inside is modern but cosy, meaning it is the perfect spot for brunch or an evening meal out.
