Have you ever wondered what it takes to work out like Kim Kardashian? I wondered that recently while looking at how fabulous she looks, especially recently, and set out to find out what her fitness routine entails. After having watched several Instagram stories and snaps of her at the gym, it really motivated me to discover what it takes to get her fabulous physique! Here is my experience and journey in taking the steps to workout like Kim Kardashian!

Kim Kardashian, famous for her beautiful looks, and equally stunning seemingly ‘photoshop in real life’ figure, let us know in an episode after THAT undesirable photo of her went viral, that she was ready to step her fitness game and change up her work out routine. At that point I scratched my head, thinking, but, she’s already in great shape! She claims she used to regularly work out, but didn’t have a strict or consistent routine. To help her on her body goals journey, she enlisted the help of a bodybuilding fitness trainer who she found on Instagram, Melissa Alcantara.

Dedication, Consistency, Discipline

Being refreshingly personal, she shared her secrets to get her new and improved banging body, through a series of Instagram posts, stories and Snapchats. My jaw dropped while watching an episode where her trainer Melissa raided her cupboard and told her that she would have to forfeit her most loved snacks, and also, her outings with her famous friend Jonathan Cheban, the legendary Food God. I also gasped in awe watching her turn down all of the things she used to eat, thinking that whatever her fitness goals may be, she was definitely blessed, to begin with!

I too have always wanted to achieve the sculpted body obtained by all members of Victoria’s Secret models, however, without consistent dedication, it had always been a challenge for me to achieve and maintain a toned figure. Kim always reiterates that the key to her success is dedication and consistency. She says that previously she was definitely lean, however, she was not fully healthy and fit. Her consistent work out helped her shed 20 pounds, gain muscle mass and diminish a huge portion of cellulite. I certainly agree that she looks better than ever, rocking a bod all of us would die for whilst keeping her sultry curves and of course her famous derriere.

Getting My Booty Into Gear

It was then that I decided, enough is enough, switched off Netflix halfway through the compelling series ‘Dirty John’, (I know! Madness!) and decided to work out like Kim Kardashian. After some research, I then realised that most of her workouts start at the crisp early hours of the morning from 5:30 to 6:00 am. Groaning at the thought of waking up at an ungodly hour, but reminding myself that I too could possess that butt with some dedication, I hauled myself to bed to get some much-needed beauty sleep.

The alarm rang that next morning, and honestly sent shivers down my spine. I did not want to get up from my warm and cosy bed, and my brain started to convince me that I could sleep in and that I could exercise later. I then thankfully remembered that today was the day I needed to make a change, I was going to be as fit as Kim Kardashian! Using the 5-second count down technique, I leapt to my feet and stumbled around to put on my gym shoes and gym gear, minus of course Kim’s signature Yeezys. Since Kim works out in her custom-made home gym, I assumed that she does not eat before her workouts, and downed 2 glasses of lemon water to start the day instead. Luckily, being so early, I didn’t have much of an appetite.

Surprisingly, it felt great to be up so early, the streets were very quiet and I actually felt extremely proud of myself. I understood why Kim chooses to work out so early, a habit that a lot of extremely successful people employ to get a head start in your day. When I got to the gym, it was pleasantly empty and I took to the treadmill to warm up with a slow jog for 5 minutes.

I knew that to work out like Kim Kardashian, I would have to focus on weight training. There is very little cardio and her method is focused on working different body parts on different days. In a workout routine shared with Woman’s Day, she revealed that she dedicates 2 days for glute exercises, one of them dedicated to employing heavy weighted sets with low reps, in order to grow muscle, and the other employing moderate weights with higher reps, which tones and define your legs.

One day during the week would be dedicated to abs, although Melissa emphasises that each workout will always engage the core. No wonder Kim has such enviable abs, like never before. The other days would be dedicated to the arms, shoulders and the back respectively.

Leg Day

I decided to start with glute exercises, as one of my main goals was to get a bubbalicious booty as well as toned legs. I started the first morning with the 7 exercises detailed on her app that included:

  • Dead Lifts (2 x 15 reps)
  • Sumo Dead Lifts (2 x 15 reps)
  • Back Squats (2 x 15 reps)
  • Bear Crawls with a Medicine Ball (2 x 15 reps)
  • Weighted Kickbacks (2 x 15 reps)
  • Jump Squats with a Kettle Ball (2 x 15 reps)
  • Weighted Lunges (2 x 15 reps)
  • Weighted Hip Thrusts (2 x 15 reps)

This was an intense workout, that required low reps yet heavyweights. I started out with 15kg, making a note to increase the weights gradually over time. The intensity of the workouts was very high, but was extremely fulfilling. Afterwards, I felt spent, however it felt amazing to engage some leg muscles that I never even realised existed. I finished the workout with Kim Kardashian’s signature finisher, spending 20 minutes on the stair master to get some cardio and continue toning those glutes, as well as of course a few gym selfies!

Then I got home, had my shower and felt more energised than ever before! I took a mental note of this while I prepared a breakfast of oats, chia, cocoa nibs, banana and some berries on the side, something Kim Kardashian has been said to enjoy eating.

Then I went about my day, with a kind of confidence that I hadn’t experienced before! Since Kim is known to fit in more than one workout a day, despite being an incredibly busy business mogul with 3 kids to look after, I decided that I too must fit that in. In the afternoon, I took a 40-minute power walk around my neighbourhood. The energy I gained from working out in the early morning had already very positively affected the rest of the day.

In the evening, as I sat on the couch, I felt excited to start the next day’s workout, and hopped into bed early. After eating protein heavy meals with plenty of leafy green vegetables, olive oil and drinking at least a gallon of water a day, I drank my regular white tea before bed and curled up with a good book for half an hour.

Abs & Core

The next day couldn’t come fast enough and this time my mind wasn’t as keen to trick myself into staying in between the sheets. However, when I first woke up, I felt as if my legs had been hit with a ton of bricks. According to Melissa, it is essential to let your body rest in order to build those muscles. This, of course, did not mean skipping a workout, but instead focusing on another part of your body. I chose to focus on abs and core work, spending 30 minutes in the gym doing the following exercises with high reps:

  • Leg Lifts (4 x 20 reps)
  • Reverse V Ups (4 x 20 reps)
  • Abs Bicycle + Claps (4 x 20 reps)

Although my legs felt like caving in, I saved the below photo on my phone as inspiration in order to get through my workout. One of Kim Kardashian’s ultimate tips is to maintain consistency and dedication. Melissa herself described Kim as being her ideal client, someone who never cancels and that when she is dedicated to something, she does not quit.

I spent the next day dedicated to arm and shoulder exercises, and the fourth day, once my legs had healed, back onto glute exercises, with medium weights and high reps. I had already gotten used to the 5:30am wake-up and was surprisingly enjoying it.

Fitness to Kim is not only something to focus on to get a gorgeous body, it, in turn, inspires confidence as well as helps her focus for her busy day ahead. It is well known that successful CEOs start their day early, usually with an early workout, in order to make the day as productive as can be. My experience was not as difficult or awful as I thought it would be, and I felt all the more proud of myself, confident and motivated than I did before!

Trying to work out like Kim Kardashian really changed my outlook and helped me get on the road of achieving the body of my dreams. My verdict is that it is something anyone could easily try as a way to get into shape. My take on it, however, was that I could not merely spend a week on this, I needed to maintain Kim’s dedication and consistency over a long period of time. In order to really get results, it would need to be a lifestyle change and most definitely not a quick fix, but maybe instead of 6 days, I would dedicate 3-4 days a week to the gym.
