I Met Lorde Before She Was A Mega-Star, And Here’s What She’s Like

Lorde might be an international music star, but is she as cool IRL? I met Lorde and now I'm here to tell you the truth!

Lorde – international star, curator of blockbuster soundtracks (see: ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1’), music-maker and all-around weirdo. Since her debut at sixteen with smash-hit ‘Royals’, she has remained little more than an Instagram-aesthetic with a private life kept mostly behind closed doors.

For the fans that have met Lorde (like me!), it is a glimpse under the veil. And I’m here to tell you just what that looks like!

How Did We Meet?

Along with the release of her debut album, ‘Pure Heroine’, Lorde also released tickets to her first world tour.

Having fallen head-over-heels after hearing the first few lines of ‘Royals’, I snagged myself some tickets and sat myself down outside the concert venue around one o’clock, determined to guarantee myself that front-row spot.

Keep in mind, Lorde herself was rather niche back then. Her fans were dedicated, but the number of them would only grow in the years to come.

Her musical style has always been lyrically synaesthetic, and her vocal talents that of the original indie-lilt so many ‘Triple J’ singers emulate today.

With a small crowd waiting, there was a personal air around the concert. Not only could we sit by the door and listen to her warm-up, she thanked us and laughed at the preemptive cheers.

We Met Her Mum!

With such an un-intimidating crowd around, Sonja Yelich came out to meet-and-greet the fans and take photos of the crowd!

With Lorde (aka. Ella Yelich-O’Conner) being underage, of course, her mum would be there. For the fans, however, it was very grounding.

Lorde, despite her success, has always been authentically who she is. A who exactly that is, is a young girl from New Zealand with a supportive family present in her life.

If you check in with Sonja Yelich’s Instragram, it is easy to see the creative and warm influences that surrounded Lorde as she reached stardom.

Then I Met Lorde, Herself!

The luxury of the early fans of rising stars is the ability to be seen and heard; without the sea of millions of other fans around them. This is true especially for concerts!

After standing, jumping around, and dancing for hours, the most dedicated of fans filed out the back of the venue and waited for another hour or so in the rain and typical Melbourne cold.

The reward was a personal meeting with Lorde!

She came out wrapped in an oversized coat, security covering her with an umbrella, and braved the weather with us. Despite a fair line-up waiting to meet her, she took her time to take photos, to sign shirts and albums, and have a small chat with us all.

I had my photo taken with her (praise Lorde), but the most striking thing about the experience was how humble she was throughout.

And She’s As Cool As You Think

In a world of insanely talented artists, there are many horror stories of fans meeting celebs and the horrible attitudes of some famous people. Of course, it must get draining to be swamped with attention – and understanding that, artists like Lorde who remain sweet are even more remarkable.

She has always presented herself authentically, and been a completely unapologetic weirdo. She’s cool, she’s smart, and she’s always appreciative of her fans and supporters! That’s what we love about her!

If you want proof that she treasures her fans – keep an eye out for the longevity of the fans’ gifts. A friend gave her a handmade, beaded bracelet, which weeks later, she showed us she was still wearing in her hair.

Hands down, Lorde is in exceptionally cool celeb in both the public eye, and in reality.
