On a day to day basis, you would never expect to fall victim to burglary until it happens to you and trust me when I say you will never forget the experience.
It was finally Saturday and I was looking forward to sleeping in after a long and busy week. With the sunlight rolling in through the blinds, I thought I was still dreaming when I heard someone ring the doorbell so I ignored it and went back to sleep. Just minutes later, I walked to the bathroom and there was another knock on the door. Half awake, I opened the door without thinking twice of a burglar.
I was greeted by a thin, blonde woman eager to enter my apartment. She repeatedly asked me to let her in and when I asked her why she claimed she needed to charge her phone as it ran out of battery. Can I just point out that my parents have taught me from a young age not to let strangers in, but in my head I thought, how dangerous can this significantly small, well-dressed woman be? Well, turns out I was wrong.
She entered my apartment and walked straight to the living room where I had a phone charger, to charge her “dead” phone. I noticed her touch my laptop and take note of my name shown on the screen; she then picked up my Uber Eats receipt which had my name on it too. Following that, she walked into my bedroom and opened up my wardrobe. At this point I started to get suspicious and questioned what her intentions were. I told her to get out of my room and she headed back to the living room once again.
She picked up my hard drive and I assumed she was going to hand it to me but instead she put it in her bag. I continuously asked her to return my hard drive and she responded saying that I could have her credit card details in return for my hard drive. Now I was really fuming with rage. I tried to grab her luxurious YSL bag to retrieve my hard drive but I just could not. I shouted at her saying I would call the police, to which she replied “the police are already on their way here”. I could not understand what she was saying and this was the beginning of her crazy accusations and claims.
This female burglar pointed at one of my lamps and said “I know what that is, I know what you and Chris are doing.” I would like to make it clear that I have absolutely no idea who Chris is and clearly she was not in the right state of mind. I demanded her to leave my apartment and return my hard drive once again, which she did not. We both went to the entrance of my apartment and I was screaming for help for a good 5 minutes but nobody came. I was torn. On one hand, I wanted her out of my apartment, however I was not going to let her leave with my belongings.
She attempted to run to the lift multiple times but I kept resisting her and pushing her towards the other direction. She began crying, saying I was violent. It was more like self-defense from a burglar. Just when I was about to give up and accept what may, the lift doors opened and 2 police officers rushed over to us. My neighbours had called the police. The woman was arrested and charged for burglary. It was pretty traumatizing for me and I could not be more thankful for my neighbours for calling the police and for the police for helping me and commending me on keeping the burglar at the scene until help arrived.
