Throughout your studies, you’ll most likely spend a lot of time in your dorm room whether it’s studying or dying from hangovers. If you’re someone who struggles being away from home, or you just love a comfortable cosy space, making your dorm room feel a little more homely makes it easier to spend a ton of time in there. Here’s the easiest ways to jazz up your dorm room on a student budget.
Adding soft furnishings to a room instantly makes it not only more physically comfortable, it gives it such a cosy atmosphere too. This is probably one of the most inexpensive ways to upgrade your dorm room, you can pick up gorgeous cushions and throws from places like Target or even from charity shops. You can always personalise and jazz up boring cushion covers too with beads, sequins or buts of pattern from scraps of materials. If you can find a cute linen throw you could always even use it as a wall hanging, ultimate cosy vibes.
There’s nothing more fresh and homey than a room full of plants. It’s scientifically proven that plants improve the air in your room by levelling out humidity and reducing carbon dioxide levels so really, it’s good for you. Plants can be pricey but be smart with where you shop, do your research and go second hand where you can, you could even buy a pack of seeds and grow your own if you fancy a challenge. If you’re rubbish at keeping plants alive (it’s harder than it seems okay?) opt for succulents and cacti, they’re pretty much idiot proof.
Having good light isn’t just important for your selfies. If you’re not lucky enough to have great natural light in your dorm room, invest in a good strong study lamp. Dim light when you’re trying to focus is guaranteed to send you to sleep and minimise your studying productivity. Equally, when it’s time to relax, you don’t want garish, bright lights keeping you wired. Get yourself a soft, warm-tone light or, better yet, some candles: the light they give off is so gentle and relaxing, and the flickering is sure to chill you out. As long as you make sure they’re extinguished before you go so sleep!
Lets be real, you want your dorm room to look and feel as much like a home as possible, the best way to do this is to make it personal. Bring some bits from your room at home if possible for a bit of familiarity: this will subconsciously make you feel more relaxed and comfortable in your dorm room. The other great way to make your space feel like ‘yours’ is with pictures, You can get them printed and delivered so cheap online, having pictures of your family and friends around you is for sure going to make you feel more at home. Pick up some cheap frames or even just hang them on a piece of string with some little pegs and drape across the wall.
