Winter can be one of the most boring times of the year… that’s if you don’t know where to go or what to do. Birmingham is the second largest city in England and if you’re thinking of visiting or live here and don’t know what to do then this is how to spend winter in Birmingham.
Winter in Birmingham is the best time to shop because there are so many sales and you can save so much money. One of the main places to go shopping in Birmingham is Bullring which has everything from Selfridges to Debenhams, All saints to a huge Primark and so much more so it’s worth a day drip there. (They even have a new NYX store and a Morphe store opening very soon!)
But if you’re willing to travel a little then you can even go to Touchwood which is in Solihull or Intu Merry Hill in Derby which are a great places to shop too.
Birmingham has the biggest German Christmas market outside of Germany which is pretty impressive. You can get all of your unique Christmas decorations, gifts and snacks all in one place and it’s right outside Bullring so you can kill two birds with one stone with your Christmas shopping. Even if you’ve done all your Christmas shopping then you can still go to enjoy the range of food from meats to chocolate waffles and hot chocolate which is perfect to have in the cold winter weather. They have a beautiful display of lights which you have to go see during the night.
If the snow gets as good as last year then you can go to the many parks scattered around Birmingham and enjoy the snow by building a snowman or sledging. One of the biggest parks in Birmingham you can go to is Canon Hill park which isn’t too far from the city center. And when you get too cold you can always go into the MAC cafe where you can enjoy a cup of hot chocolate to warm you up.
Birmingham is famous for the amazing food you can find anywhere, whether you head to the Balti Triangle, The Mailbox or Grand Central. You can enjoy different cuisines from Indian to Thai, Lebanese to Mexican and Greek to Italian all withing the beaming city.
If you’re shopping in Bullring then you can access Grand Central from Debenhams and eat whatever you want because you’ll find everything like Mexican Tapas, Indian street food, sushi or even a cheeky Nandos.
Birmingham has a huge bus network which will take you everywhere in Birmingham and surrounding areas like the Black Country, Wolverhampton, Coventry and much more. This is great when it comes to day trips, you can get an adult day saver for £4.60 (before 9:30, after is only £4) a group ticket for £8 and you can have up to 5 people (or 2 adults and four children).
You can day trips to places like Star City where you can watch a movie, go bowling, mini golf, laser quest and eat amazing pan Asian, Indian and American food. This is a great place to go if you’re with young children because they will love the arcade with loads of games and even bumper cars.
If you’re a book worm then you will love the new library which has just been built in the city center in between Broadstreet and Bullring. There is everything from old records, CDs, books, magazines and so much more. If you find your way to the secret garden then you’ll be looking at an amazing view of the winter in Birmingham.
And for all you chocolate fans (basically everyone) you can spend a few hours in Cadbury’s world where you can learn (and eat) about the best chocolate in the entire world. This attraction is especially great for children but adults will love it too.
And last but not least you can go to Stratford Upon Avon which is the birth place of Shakespeare and is a great place to go for a day out either for a play or just to visit. If you would like to go then I’d recommend getting the train because the bus could take up to two hours but the bus only around 20 minutes.
