How To Prevent Ingrown Hairs Before They Even Start

How amazing does it feel after shaving? Having skin like a baby is great until our arch nemesis makes an appearance… itchy, sore and embarrassing… every girl’s worst dream: ingrown hairs. Those annoying little hairs that have a tendency to regrow back on themselves can be a nightmare to not only treat but to also prevent! If you are someone who has never, or yet to, experience them you’re very lucky! However, here are a few tips & tricks on how to prevent ingrown hairs and making sure you don’t have to experience them again.

Replacing Your Razor

This is something I am sure every girl is reading and feels awkwardly ashamed about… guilty. It is one of those things we tend to forget about, can’t really be bothered doing or can’t afford to be replacing our razors as regularly as we should be. It is recommended (depending on the quality) we should be replacing our razors every 3-4 weeks. If you suffer from ingrown hairs it could be down to using a blunt razor – meaning the hairs aren’t getting cut as short or well as they should be.

Use Shaving Cream

Again, this is one of those things us students hate to buy. “Do we really need it? Does it make a difference? Ahhh I’ll just use conditioner…” Shaving cream is formulated to soften the hairs and make your razor grab onto every hair and cut them as short as possible. So, in the long run it will prevent ingrown hairs from appearing or returning!

Exfoliate

Every drugstore sells exfoliating gloves for usually very low prices. These are a life-saver (we know!). Exfoliating means it removes any dead skin or blocked hair follicles, allowing hair to grow straight and downwards preventing them from growing back into the skin. Doing this in the shower is the most effective – your skin is already softened up by the water and will make it less painful to scrub your skin.

Shave in the bath…not the shower

Soaking in the bath softens the skin up to twice as much as it does in the shower, meaning the hair and follicles and less harsh and easier to shave. The warmth of the water allows the razor blade to smoothly glide over the skin. And who wouldn’t want to sit in a warm bubble bath soaking with candles and a glass of wine?

Wear loose clothing after shaving

After shaving it is important to allow your skin to breathe and for the hair follicles to repair. Your skin can become extremely dry once shaven, so wearing loose clothes allows the air to get to the skin and repair. Having clothes rub against that area creates rashes, sores and… dun dun dun… ingrown hairs! This is a foolproof tip to follow when learning how to prevent ingrown hairs.
