If you’ve got a festival coming up, you must already be very excited. You’re excited for the music, you’re excited for the atmosphere, you might even be slightly excited for the camping. One thing you won’t be excited for, however, is the walk between where you get dropped off and the campsite. For this reason, it’s super important to pack light and pack well. Knowing how to pack for a festival is really important.
It is advisable to bring a proper camping rucksack. These bags are designed for camping so have lots of sneaky compartments. These bags are also designed to be carried so will be a lot more comfortable and cleaner than dragging a wheeled suitcase through mud.
The bottom layer of your packing should be food. Food is heavier than anything else and will usually survive at the bottom of a bag more than your camera or autograph book. When deciding what food to bring, you need to think about what you’ll be able to cook.
If you have a portable cooker, then pot noodles are amazing. If you don’t have access to a cooker, then think about easy cupboard food that doesn’t need refrigerating or cooking – cold baked beans and tinned soups are often popular. Breakfast is usually easier: breakfast bars or smoothies are very filling and super easy to carry.
If you want to bring some booze with you, try and find out if there is a super market near the festival site. They will usually have amazing festival drink deals on and you can set yourself up before going back out to get a few crates of beer or cider.
You need clothes, and it’s sensible to have yourself a little fashion show and try your outfits on before so you know exactly what to bring. You should also check the weather before you pack so you’re prepared. Each outfit you pack, you should roll up and put in its own plastic bag to keep dry. (These plastic bags can be reused throughout the festival as rubbish bags).
When deciding which shoes to bring, think of practically. You will need a pair of shoes you can easily pull on to go for a wee in the middle of the night. However you also need a pair that are sturdy and mud proof. You don’t want to ruin your pretty suede heels in festival mud, it really isn’t worth it.
It’s also advisable to try spare underwear and socks, drinks get spilt and you don’t want to spend a weekend with soggy knickers. Similarly, you will want to bring a water proof, you never know what is going to happen and English summers can’t be trusted. Parklife started off all sunny and lovely, but everyone ended the festival by singing Wonderwall in the rain. This is essential when it comes to knowing how to pack for a festival.
Once you’ve got your food and clothes, you need to think about your camping essentials. Are you bringing a cooker? If you are, you will need to bring propane gas (and will have to check the festival regulations for that). Are you in charge of a tent? Do you have all of the poles and pegs needed to erect it? Do you have a warm enough sleeping bag? You need all of these things when understanding how to pack for a festival!
There are also some other essential items that you will require to live a normal life: toothbrush, toothpaste, toilet paper, dry shampoo, and face wipes – absolutely necessary. You should also consider bringing a money belt or bum bag to keep hold of your ID, phone, portable charger, and money. You don’t want to leave anything valuable in your tent, so don’t bring anything you can’t carry.
If you’re sure you’ve got all of those essentials you can move onto the more miscellaneous things. Festivals are a time of expression and fun, so bring glitter and face paint and have fun with it! Maybe you want to bring a disposable camera with you to remember the festival on film. These little things can just get thrown into your bag at the last minute.
