How To Mix And Match Neon Colours The Right Way

Neon is one of the hottest – and brightest – trends this season, but there are so many ways to wear it. You don’t just need to stick to one colour either: there are plenty of ways to mix and match. It’s all about knowing how to mix and match the right way so you don’t end up a kaleidoscope of colour. Here’s how to rock the neon look the right way.

1. Know your combinations

If you want to take that bold step and mix and match multiple neon colours, you have to know what combinations work well together. Green and pink neon is a perfect match and can work together practically any way. Neon pink also works with neon orange, Another good pairing is fluorescent yellow and cobalt blue, as the rich dark perfectly compliments the brightness. It is also important that you choose the right neon colours for your skin tone: those with pale skin should opt for brighter, richer neon hues like pink and cobalt, while darker tones suit lighter colours such as yellow and orange.

2. Make bold statements

You’re wearing neon, so don’t be afraid to really go for it! Really make a statement by wearing an entire neon outfit, seen on the likes of Kim Kardashian and Blake Lively. You don’t need to mix and match different colours with this outfit – it’s all about the statement of one colour taking centre stage. If you’re not feeling as bold, then make a statement with one key piece, such as a jacket or handbag, and keep the rest of your outfit neutral. This is a good way to really show off that piece, and it makes it look more classic and expensive when complimented with monochrome or lighter colours.

3. Subtle yet strong

If you aren’t quite ready to make such a loud statement but still want to try the neon trend, then opt for a more subtle look by wearing one neon statement accessory with a neutral outfit. Try an oversized necklace, statement earrings or a handbag. They are small but effective components of your outfit which, if used in a bright colour, will create a stylish spin on an everyday outfit. You don’t need to stop at one accessory – try a handbag and earrings, or shoes and a necklace. It’s important that they’re not too close together so that the outfit is tied together nicely – literally from head to toe. You only need to stick to one or two pieces and it will still work as that’s the beauty of neon.

4. Add more trends

Mixing and matching neon doesn’t stop at wearing block colours. Take advantage of the numerous other trends right now, and incorporate neon into them to tick multiple trends off your list. Use the animal print trend and work a neon leopard print look, as seen on the runways of Versace. Stripes are well and truly here to stay, so add a splash of neon to some black trousers with an effective racing stripe, as seen in Forever 21 and Pretty Little Thing. My personal favourite double trend is neon lace: be the centre of attention in a neon lace bodysuit for an eclectic festival vibe or dress up with dark jeans for hitting the club. Before you know it, you’ve worked tons of trends and still mixed neon in your outfit!

5. Make it up

To really compliment a neon-infused outfit, wearing the right makeup is just as important as the outfit itself. If you want to make a mini statement with your make up, then it’s crucial that you do this with either your lips or your eyes – NOT both. Too much neon make up only works for a paint party. Make a bold eye line and make sure you’re matching the same combinations discussed earlier – for example, blue eyeliner with a yellow outfit, but stick to a nude lip. Wear a bright pink lipstick to finish off a neon green outfit, but keep your eye make-up minimal.

And that is how you mix and match neon colours the right way. What are your favourite neon colours? Let us know in the comments!
