What is Pigmentation?

Pigmentation, more often called Hyperpigmentation, is when melanin is overproduced in certain spots on the skin. Hyperpigmentation results in flat, darkened patches of skin that are light brown to black in colour, and can vary in size and shape.

What causes Skin Pigmentation?

A common cause of hyperpigmentation is an excess production of melanin. Melanin is a pigment that gives skin its colour. And it’s produced by skin cells called melanocytes. Several different conditions or factors can alter the production of melanin in the body such as:

  • Lightening or bleaching the skin

  • Hormonal changes

There are many types of pigmentation which affect the face:

Melasma is believed to be caused by hormonal changes and develops during pregnancy. Areas of hyperpigmentation can appear on any area of the body. They appear most commonly on the abdomen and face.

Sunspots, also called liver spots or solar lentigines, are common. They’re related to excess sun exposure over time. Generally, they appear as spots of hyperpigmentation on areas exposed to the sun, like the hands and face.

It is very easy to cover up skin pigmentation with concealers and colour correctors. A good primer to use which acts as a colour corrector beneath makeup is Smashbox’s Photo Finish primer. Its green colour will help eradicate any dark blemishes.

Use Lemon Juice: Mix lemon juice and honey together. Then spread across the blemished areas of skin. Lemon is a natural bleaching agent which will help pigmentation fade.

Use a Potato: Take a raw potato and cut it in two. Then place the raw inside of the potato on the area of pigmentation. Potatoes are said to work great in pigmented areas and dark spots because they contain an enzyme called Catecholase which helps inhibit your melanocytes.

Use Aloe Vera: Aloe Vera doesn’t affect the skins natural PH while providing moisture so will help to reduce appearance of pigmentation when rubbed into your skin.

Use Cucumber: combine cucumber with honey and lemon for a homemade remedy which will rejuvenate your skin and complexion.

Use an Orange Peel: Sun-dry the orange peel and grind it into a powder. Then mix with lemons juice and honey. The citric acid in the orange peel will help to reduce melanin content.

Use Almonds: Grind up almonds into paste with honey and lemon juice and apply to your face. Leave it on over-night and do every night for two weeks. The vitamin E will help reduce any appearance of pigmentation due to being an antioxidant.

A lot of things can lead to skin pigmentation on the face, but as you can see there are also a lot of natural home remedies which can reverse the condition and even out skin tone.
